Renault released the Megane in 1996, with it taking the place of the Renault 19, even though it shared many of the same underpinnings. It didn't take long before the hatchback earned the title of European Car of the Year (2003), mainly because of its high safety rating and stylish appearance. After many revisions and four generations, Renault decided to discontinue the Megane in 2022 to focus on the E-Tech 100% electric model.

Engines and transmissions
Over its long lifespan, Renault built the Megane with petrol and diesel engines, a manual or an automatic transmission, and standard front-wheel drive.
Petrol- 128bhp 1.2-litre entry-level engine provides more than 50mpg and returns 120g/km of CO2 emissions.
- GT 1.3-litre generates 138bhp with up to 45.6mpg, while older GT models included a 216bhp 2.0-litre with a 38mpg efficiency rating.
- Megane RS hot hatchback includes a 295bhp 1.8-litre engine, taking the car from 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds, though older models include a 276bhp variant with a 35.8mpg efficiency rating.
- dCi 110 generates 108bhp with a 0-60mph time of 10.9 seconds.
- ENERGY dCi 130 produces 128bhp and reaches 60mph in 9.7 seconds.
- Both have efficiency ratings of more than 70mpg, with CO2 emission figures under 100g/km for the entry-level model.
Practicality
The five-door Megane models were specifically created for families, offering plenty of interior room and a decent amount of boot space.
Interior space- Broad adjustment range on the driver's seat gives the perfect view of the road.
- Two adults can fit in the back seat, while three children will find it exceptionally spacious.
- Fitting a child seat is easy with the wide open doors and ISOFIX points.
- 384-litre boot is larger than the Volkswagen Golf.
- Putting down the rear seats increases the capacity to 1,247 litres.
- Tie-down hooks help to secure bags and luggage.
- Megane Estate models with an elongated body were known as the Sport Tourer.
- Two-door bodystyles include a coupé and convertible.
- Hatchback can be found in three- and five-door variants.
- Saloon models offer a four-door style with a boot lid.
Safety
- 2015 Euro NCAP rating was a perfect five stars.
- While both adult and child occupant ratings were over 85%, the safety assist and pedestrian ratings were 71%.

Fourth Generation (2018 to 2022)
When the new models arrived for a fourth generation, they featured a whole new design. Taller headlights were complemented by C-shaped signature daytime running lights cutting into the bumper. Below that, a grille was added to cool the engine, while the side scoops were fitted for the available fog lamps.
A 2020 update gave the Megane RS models new powertrain options, updated exhaust vents in the front, and redesigned alloy wheels. New black door mirror caps and some uniquely sculptured lines set the lineup apart from the other models.

Third Generation (2008 to 2020)
Even though there were now several bodystyles available for the Megane, the five-door hatchback became the most popular overall. It featured a strong safety rating and was perfect for families. Angular shapes were employed for the body, and the tailgate was given a curved back window to give the car an extended look.
A facelift of the models occurred in 2006, along with the release of the GT. This sportier option included integrated fog lights and a broader grille. There were also now two exhausts coming out of the rear bumper.

Used Renault Megane FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Renault Megane?
The diesel engines have been the most popular, likely because they are cheaper to run. Renault supplied diesel engines -badged as dCi- that provide an efficiency rating of above 70mpg.
Which are the most popular model variants?
There have been several models available, such as Expression+, Dynamique Nav, GT Line, GT Nav, Iconic, RS Line and RS. The most popular among used models is the Dynamique Tom Tom with its standard rear parking sensors, driving mode selector and sat nav.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Customers should look out for the upgraded 9.3-inch infotainment system that's easier to see and a hands-free parking system that's useful in the city. There's also an Alcantara upholstery option that provides an upmarket appearance.
Is the Renault Megane a good family car?
Yes, especially the four- or five-door models that make it easier to get into the rear seats. There's also a decent amount of boot space that can hold the family's luggage or groceries.
Is there a hybrid version of the Renault Megane?
Prior to being discontinued in 2022, Renault hadn't supplied a hybrid powertrain for the Megane. However, the company does offer the E-Tech 100% electric model. This EV is based on the Megane but has zero tailpipe emissions.
Is the Renault Megane available as an automatic?
Yes, there are some models with an automatic transmission, but they aren't nearly as popular as those with a manual gearbox. Customers may have to do a little more searching or pay slightly extra to get a used automatic Megane.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
Despite the numerous powertrain options, Renault didn't build the Megane with a four-wheel drive configuration. However, all models include front-wheel drive, which helps to lower the cost to run.
