Engines and transmissions

Currently, the SEAT Ibiza is only available with petrol engines, though diesel used to be offered. It also comes with a manual or an automatic gearbox and standard front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Fifth generation 1.0 TSI ranges between 73bhp and 113bhp, depending on the configuration.
  • Combined consumption is up to 54.3mpg.
  • Older 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers 147bhp, but it's a rare find.
Diesel
  • Older 1.6-litre diesel engine creates 94bhp to hit 60mph in 11.1 seconds.
  • Maximum efficiency rating is 60.1mpg.

Practicality

The SEAT Ibiza is the perfect small-sized car for city driving, but there is also room for adults and children to fit comfortably.

Interior space
  • Height-adjustable driver's seat works well with the adjusting steering wheel to create a good position.
  • Outer rear seats are suitable for two adults.
  • Hidden ISOFIX points help to secure child seats.
Boot space
  • 355-litre boot available, which is more than the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.
  • Boot space expands to 823 litres with the rear seats folded down.
  • Variable boot floor changes the loading area so that it's level.
Bodystyles
  • Five-door hatchback was available for all generations.
  • Five-door estate, named the Ibiza ST, was available for the fourth generation only.
  • Three-door hatchback was discontinued with the fifth generation.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP gave a perfect five-star rating in 2022.
  • The adult occupant rating is 83%, with the child occupant at 82%.
  • Standard safety kit includes electronic stability control, six airbags, emergency brake assist, hill hold control and tyre pressure monitoring.

Technology

  • 8.25- or 9.2-inch infotainment system works seamlessly.
  • Smartphone integration available through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • Large digital cockpit keeps the driver informed.

SEAT Ibiza generations

The SEAT Ibiza was first revealed as a Spanish supermini in 1984, when Volkswagen owned the company. The car has been through five generations and remains in production today. Each model brought updated styling and looks without losing any of the original design, and it maintained its fun appearance.

Fourth Generation (2008 to Present)

During the fourth generation, the Ibiza looked completely different from typical SEAT vehicles. It had lots of sharp edges on the outside, a design trait that was so successful, the brand's entire lineup adopted them. There was also a three-door model that appealed to the younger generation, known as the SC or Sport Coupé. An estate model was also released, known as the Ibiza ST, giving drivers a larger boot space but still relatively compact exterior dimensions. During this time, an Ecomotive model was released that returned an average fuel economy figure of up to 80mpg.

With a 2012 facelift, SEAT brought some mild exterior updates and then restyled the Ibiza further in 2015, so this is why used examples will look slightly different. This second update included new powertrains, along with a new interior style with luxurious materials and an optional touchscreen display.

Used SEAT Ibiza FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the SEAT Ibiza?

Despite so many variations available, the 1.0-litre petrol engine has been the most popular. It can be found with several different power outputs, designed to either be more efficient or provide faster acceleration. The slightly larger 1.2-litre engine is also popular among Ibiza drivers.

What are the most popular trim levels?

The new Ibiza lineup has six trims: SE, SE Technology, FR, FR Sport, XCELLENCE and XCELLENCE Lux. From a used standpoint, the FR has been the most popular, providing upgraded features such as cruise control, sports suspension and exclusive body detailing.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for 18-inch alloy wheels that make the Ibiza really stand out. There are also some metallic paint colours available. Inside the cabin, the larger 9.25-inch infotainment system and larger driver display are worth looking out for.

Is the SEAT Ibiza a good family car?

The Ibiza has more room inside than it appears. Four adults can fit comfortably with a child in the middle rear seat. There's also more boot space in the rear than with the VW Polo or Ford Fiesta.

Is there a hybrid version of the SEAT Ibiza?

SEAT hasn't made a hybrid Ibiza yet, but the company has been working on making an electric-powered lineup. The SEAT Leon has a hybrid configuration, but is a larger car.

Is the SEAT Ibiza available as an automatic?

Yes, SEAT has made both manual and automatic gearboxes with the Ibiza. It's much easier and often cheaper to buy a used Ibiza with a manual transmission, but there is a good selection available if you are set on an automatic.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, all SEAT Ibizas come standard with front-wheel drive. As a smaller vehicle, the Ibiza doesn't benefit from having a four-wheel drive. For regular city driving and motorway navigation, front-wheel drive provides superior handling while keeping the efficiency as high as possible.
