Engines and transmissions

Throughout its years, the RAV4 has been available with petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, paired with a manual or an automatic gearbox and front- or four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 2.5-litre works with an 88kW electric motor (front-wheel drive) and an optional second 40kW motor for the rear axle (four-wheel drive). This configuration provides 214bhp (front-wheel drive) or 218bhp (four-wheel drive).
  • Plug-in hybrid version uses the same petrol engine with a larger battery pack for total power output to increase up to 301bhp, with an electric driving range of up to 46 miles.
  • Older 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine rated up to 43mpg.
Diesel
  • Older models have a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 140bhp.
  • Diesel engines are the most economical non-hybrid, achieving 50-60mpg.

Practicality

Not only does the RAV4 have sufficient power for everyday driving, but it also benefits from having a comfortable interior, which makes it well-suited for a family.

Interior space
  • Driver's seat is very accommodating, with available height adjustment on passenger seat on the Excel trim.
  • Rear seats offer space for adults, and seatbacks can be slightly tilted for comfort.
  • ISOFIX points for child seats are placed behind fabric padding.
Boot space
  • 580-litre boot is larger than the Volkswagen Tiguan.
  • Maximum of 1,690 litres of space with the rear seat folded down flat.
  • Wide and flat boot has an adjustable floor.
Bodystyles
  • Three-door body available until the third generation.
  • Five-door body available with every generation.

Safety

  • Five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2019.
  • 93% adult occupancy rating.
  • Standard safety kit includes adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, lane trace assist, a rearview camera and the pre-collision system.

Technology

  • 8.0-inch infotainment system has crisp graphics and is easy to use.
  • 7.0-inch driver gauge display gives quick access to vital information.
  • Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enhance connectivity.

Toyota RAV4 generations

Toyota first revealed the RAV4 in 1994, and was originally similar in size to the Suzuki Vitara. Its original design made it look like an off-road vehicle, even though it drove and handled like a car. Though RAV is short for 'Recreational Activity Vehicle, Four-Wheel Drive', more recent iterations have been available with two-wheel drive for better fuel economy and lower emissions. Over five generations, Toyota has continued to change the vehicle's appearance, add more efficient powertrains - including self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid - and upgrade the interior.

Fifth Generation (2019 to Present)

With the release of the fifth generation, Toyota worked to give the RAV4 a bolder, more upmarket look. It came with swept-back headlights for a more angular appearance, as well as enlarged wheel arches. Its flat rear-end design was changed by a forward-raked C-pillar.

The interior also received some upgrades, with a floating touchscreen display design paired with the Toyota Entune 3.0 touchscreen multimedia system. A new plug-in hybrid engine option was also introduced.

Fourth Generation (2013 to 2019)

For the fourth generation, Toyota raked the windshield differently to give the RAV4 more dynamic style. The company also removed the spare wheel from the tailgate, which had previously contributed to more of an off-road look. Overall, the SUV grew slightly longer, offering more cabin and luggage space for passengers.

In 2015, a slight refresh was released, mainly to shift the trim levels around with new equipment. Some upgraded materials were added to the cabin.

Third Generation (2006 to 2012)

The longest-lived generation changed the lineup, removing the three-door version in favour of the RAV4 only being available in a five-door bodystyle. Curved lines met with sharper corners to create a unique appearance, blending typical off-road SUV looks with hatchback usability. There was also a protective engine shield added for navigating rough terrain.

A refreshed 2009 model improved the safety systems and drivetrain. Aside from the 4WD version that included a new Sport Appearance Package, protective moulds and improved rear step bumpers were added to every vehicle.
