If you're in the market for a car that's powerful, stylish and premium, then a used BMW M4 is a great choice. BMW has only offered petrol engines with the M4, along with a manual or an automatic gearbox. Used M4 examples can be found with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, depending on the age.
PetrolEven though the BMW M4 is a two-door sports car, it's actually relatively practical, with seating to hold up to four people and a reasonably large boot.
Interior spaceIn 2013, BMW decided to separate the mid-size two-door coupé bodystyle away from the 3-Series. With the release of the 4-Series also came the high-performance M4 variant. The first models were sold in 2014 and they were available in either convertible or coupé models. Now in its second generation, BMW continues upgrading and updating the lineup with new technologies and features, ensuring that the lineup remains competitive.
With the launch of a new generation, BMW added a larger kidney grille to the front of the M4. New vents were also added to the front bumper sides for better brake cooling. BMW designed the silhouette of the M4 to look like the 8 Series. Two years later, BMW released the Competition Sport Lightweight (CSL) variant with 110kg less weight and carbon fibre elements.
A 2024 refresh changed the styling of the M4, giving it a striking appearance. Additional horsepower was also put into the engine, ensuring that it was more exciting to drive.

Since the 1980s, the M3, a sports car designed for touring, had been extremely popular. However, there was a demand for a coupé variant of the M3, which is why the M4 was launched in 2014. It was essentially the same as the M3 except for the body on top.
The M4 had a bolder appearance than the standard 4-Series with its big open grille for engine cooling and its aerodynamic design. It was also available in both coupé and convertible bodystyles, giving enthusiasts more of a selection. During its first generation, it remained relatively unchanged except for some minor tweaks.

Throughout its history, the BMW M4 has only been offered with one engine option, though the output can vary depending on the variant and the packages attached to it. All M4 models have a petrol engine. Overall, the 522bhp engine offers plenty of power and acceleration.
Most used M4s are the standard variant, rather than the competition, however this still offers numerous features as standard. These include climate control, front heated seats, Merino leather upholstery and a Harman Kardon sound system. However, the M4 Competition is more powerful and the newer generation is only available in this specification.
You should look out for models with updated interiors, such as Alcantara leather with black and grey stitching. Also, it's possible to find an adaptive M exhaust and special 20-inch alloy wheels.
Even though the M4 is a two-door coupé or convertible, there's room to hold four people in the cabin. The back seats have less headroom because of the sloping roofline, so it may be best to put children in the rear. Also, the M4 has an ample amount of boot space, larger than the Mercedes-AMG C63.

All newer M4 models come with a standard automatic transmission. There are older models with a manual gearbox, but these are much harder to find in the used car market, and are sought after by enthusiasts.
