Interior spaceThe Volvo XC60 SUV followed the success of the XC90, which had appealed to drivers who needed seven seats. Revealed in 2008, the XC60 was smaller than the XC90, with space to hold five occupants only. It also had a lower price but never lacked any luxury. Over two generations, Volvo worked to refine and perfect all of the high-end touches.
Volvo didn't need to completely redesign the Mk2 XC60 as it was already a success by the time this model hit the roads. Instead, the luxury automotive company sought to refine what already existed. Some powertrain options were changed to ensure better economy, and the interior received a streamlined appearance.
A refresh in 2021 focused heavily on upgrading the infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard technology, while the cabin received an upgraded 12.3-inch digital driver's display.

The first XC60 hit the streets when Ford owned the company, so the SUV shared some engineering with the Land Rover Freelander and the Ford Mondeo. Many of the early models were diesel-powered, with only a handful of petrol SUVs sold during the beginning. This model also brought the autonomous emergency braking system (City Safety) into the mix.

Recent XC60s are only available as an eight-speed automatic. Previous versions do include the option of a six-speed manual gearbox.
The newest lineup consists of a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain. Used XC60 models can be found with a variety of petrol and diesel engines, with the diesel being the most popular. Some are designed more for performance, while others top the charts in efficiency. However, there's none quite as efficient as the new PHEV, which is rated for up to 51 miles of electric-only driving.
Newer XC60s come in three trims: Core, Plus and Ultra. The XC60 Core is designed to offer a variety of features at a lower price, while the Ultra is the top of the line. For something in between, the Plus is ideal. Previous trims included the S, SE and R-Design.
The XC60 can be outfitted with many high-end luxury touches and advanced technology. Look out for models that include rear heated seats for more passenger comfort or a premium Harman Kardon sound system for a fully immersive experience.

New XC60 models are only available as a self-charging mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid. However, Volvo has offered petrol and diesel variants of the XC60 in the past. You can find non-hybrid XC60s as well as hybrid versions in the used market.
