Since its introduction in 1999, the Toyota Yaris has been through four generations. Each new generation brings upgraded technology and a refreshed style, along with varying powertrain options. As one of the country's most reliable vehicles for minimal cost, there's a Yaris on nearly every road, further proving its popularity.

Fourth Generation (2020 to 2014)

Available as a three- and five-door hatchback, this Yaris only comes with a hybrid powertrain (with the exception of the rally-bred GR variant). It was honoured as the 2021 European Car of the Year, and the GR Yaris is known to be one of the best hot hatches on the road, with superior style and exhilarating performance.

Because of the smaller footprint, the Yaris is easy to drive on city streets. It's also highly efficient, helping to save money at the petrol pump. The only aspect lacking in the newer models is space, which is to be expected because of its small size.

Third Generation (2014 to 2020)

The hybrid Yaris was first made available during this generation, along with the petrol and diesel options. At the time of its release, it was the cheapest hybrid model in the UK, giving budget-conscious buyers the option to save more. . Styling was refreshed and technology added in significant design changes in both 2014 and 2017.

The biggest complaints from this generation relate to the excessive engine noise and uninspired performance created by the CVT gearbox. Most consumers overlooked these minor issues to have a low-cost car, allowing the Yaris to continue being one of the most popular cars in the UK.

Second Generation (2006 to 2014)

An update to the rear seat design created more practicality. Unlike many other small cars of this time, the rear seats fold flat, creating more cargo room. These seats also slide forward and backwards, allowing you to choose between more boot space or more leg room for rear passengers.

During this generation, Toyota also replaced the T-Sport with the 1.8 SR. This newer model looks sporty and has a great style, but it doesn't have the same level of performance.
