Newer XC40 models come in three trims: Core, Plus and Ultra. The Plus is a top choice, offering a good balance between the value of the base model and the luxury of the Ultra. The newest lineup of XC40 models features mild hybrid technology for added efficiency. If you want a plug-in hybrid, consider the XC40 Recharge model instead, which was introduced in 2019, although this has been rebranded as the EX40.

Depending on the engine, the Volvo XC40 has either an automatic or manual gearbox. The automatic transmission is far more popular among used XC40 SUVs, but it isn't difficult to find a manual either.

The majority of XC40 models come standard with all-wheel drive. This added capability increases traction on slippery surfaces and inspires more driving confidence. You can also find rear- and front-wheel drive variants, but these are less popular.
