If you're in the market for a car that's built to be reliable, excels in safety standards and remains practical, then a used Volvo XC40 is a great choice. As Volvo's most compact SUV model, the XC40 is economical and easy to drive but has a spacious interior and a decent-sized boot at the same time.
The Volvo XC40 has been available with petrol and diesel engines, as well as hybrid powertrains. There is a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes, along with front-, rear- or all-wheel drive.
PetrolThe Volvo XC40 isn't a full-size SUV, but it still provides plenty of space for everyday motoring, with a cabin that is well-configured for adult comfort.
Interior spaceVolvo launched the XC40 in 2017 with a similar look to the larger XC60. As a highly customisable car, used examples can be found with bold colours and a wide range of add-ons. Currently in its first generation, Volvo continues to refresh the petrol powertrains of the XC40. The XC40 Recharge, which is the plug-in hybrid variant of the compact SUV, has been rebranded as the EX40 to reflect its similarities to the XC40 and highlight its electrified status.

Petrol engines are the most popular among XC40 drivers, and they are cheaper to buy on the used market. Diesel engines had a lot of benefits, including efficiency, making them highly desirable as used cars. However, many buyers are now choosing to switch to the XC40 Recharge with the plug-in hybrid configuration.
Newer XC40 models come in three trims: Core, Plus and Ultra. The Plus is a top choice, offering a good balance between the value of the base model and the luxury of the Ultra. Both options offer 3x3 alloy wheels, cloth trims and extra lumbar support. The Plus also offers cruise control as a standard feature, whereas the Ultra doesn't.
A panoramic roof is available with some XC40 models, allowing for a brighter cabin and unique appearance. There's also a premium Harman Kardon sound system that comes highly recommended as is the enhanced Pilot Assist safety system.
Despite its smaller size compared to other Volvo SUVs, the Volvo XC40 is a decent family vehicle. This compact SUV has ample seating room, even for taller adults and its boot size is larger than that of the Audi Q3.
The newest lineup of XC40 models features mild hybrid technology for added efficiency. If you want a plug-in hybrid, consider the XC40 Recharge model instead, which was introduced in 2019, although this has been rebranded as the EX40.
Depending on the engine, the Volvo XC40 has either an automatic or manual gearbox. The automatic transmission is far more popular among used XC40 SUVs, but it isn't difficult to find a manual either.
The majority of XC40 models come standard with all-wheel drive. This added capability increases traction on slippery surfaces and inspires more driving confidence. You can also find rear- and front-wheel drive variants, but these are less popular.
