If you're in the market for a compact 4x4 vehicle that looks great, then a used Suzuki Jimny is an excellent option. Its combination of cheeky styling, back-to-basics interior and remarkably good off-road ability has made it a favourite among enthusiasts as well as those who just want a basic, small, fun SUV.
The Jimny only comes with a single powertrain option, but it is geared to take the trails by storm.
PetrolThe Suzuki Jimny may look like an SUV, but it's not laid out in a way that makes for an overly comfortable cabin for cruising. It's meant to go off-road, and that's what it has been built for, but it's fine for short journeys in and around town.
Interior spaceLarge side-opening boot door makes it easy to load.
For car variants of the current generation, only the SZ5 is widely available. This came with alloy wheels, air conditioning, a touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control and satellite navigation. LCV variants were a lot more basic, and came with steel wheels, a digital radio and air conditioning.
The Jimny comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that's rated for 36.7 mpg combined. There's only one powertrain option and it's not extremely efficient because it's designed with an off-roading focus.
Off-road enthusiasts have been exploring new areas in the Jimny for decades and have been pleased with its robustness. Suzuki has a fairly good reputation overall for manufacturing decent vehicles at affordable costs.
The Jimny is primarily designed to go off-road, so it was never built for comfort. While it can be driven on the roads, and many people do, it could become uncomfortable after longer drives, especially for taller people who want to stretch out their legs.
The Jimny is equipped with ALLGRIP Pro 4WD, which allows drivers to alter the configuration from two-wheel to four -wheel drive when there are more obstacles or the terrain becomes difficult to navigate.
The top speed of a Jimny Commercial vehicle is 90 mph.
A five-door variant of the Jimny has never been officially sold in the UK. However, there are a small amount of five-door Japanese import Jimnys on the used market.
