If you're in the market for a tiny city car that's compact, cheap to run and stylish, then a used Toyota iQ is a great choice. Measuring less than three metres long, it's not much different in size from two-seaters, except the iQ has a 3+1 configuration. The clever layout helps it to offer more room than its competitors, making it more versatile.
The Toyota iQ has been offered with a choice of two petrol engines, a manual or automatic gearbox and standard front-wheel drive.

Interior spaceToyota unveiled the iQ in 2008, showing that a tiny 2-door city car can hold more than two people. Dubbed the 3+1 configuration, the car measures less than three metres and features an incredibly short front end. The headlights have new-age styling with sharp corners and curved lines for a modern look. The vertical tailgate at the back completes the iQ design. Despite its best efforts, the iQ never became as popular as Toyota intended and it was discontinued in 2015.
The first‑generation Toyota iQ (2009 ‑ 2014) is an adorable micro‑car built for city life. It’s super compact - can park almost anywhere - yet surprisingly clever with space, allowing up to 4 people in a tiny footprint (though the rear seats are cozy). The iQ offers fuel‑efficient small engines, nimble handling, and modest running costs. Inside, it’s minimal but well put together; safety features are decent for its size. It won’t win performance awards, but for city errands, narrow streets, and easy parking, the iQ is a charming and sensible little car.

The smaller petrol engine has been the most popular, due to its efficiency. With the car's small size, the 68bhp is more than enough to keep the car moving and the 65mpg rating is great for saving money.
Toyota offered the iQ in three trims: iQ, iQ2 and iQ3. The mid-range iQ2 is the most popular among iQ owners due to its extra features, such as 15-inch polished alloys, chrome-tinted front foglamps and privacy glass.
Larger alloy wheels help to give the iQ a unique style, while front fog lights and bi-halogen headlights can add more visibility. For more comfort and functionality, consider looking for models with climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Despite there being two small seats in the back, the iQ is suitable really suitable as everyday family transport. It is possible to fit two adults in the front and two small children in the back, but three people is a lot more realistic and comfortable than four. There's also not a lot of boot space unless the rear seats are not in use.
While Toyota is a leader in hybrid technology, the iQ has only been available with the choice of two petrol engines. The smaller size helps it to achieve up to around 65mpg, making it efficient enough without hybrid tech.
The Toyota iQ has been made with both manual and automatic gearbox options. The manual has been more popular and is easier to find among used cars, though the automatic is better for inner-city driving.
All Toyota iQ cars have been built with standard front-wheel drive. Due to the smaller size and weight, four-wheel drive is unneeded.
