MY MOTOR SMART LIMITED
If you're in the market for a great value and practical small car with innovative features, then a used Nissan Micra is a great choice. It's designed to be easy to drive through the city as well as tackle the occasional motorway journey. Having been the first Japanese vehicle to earn the Car of the Year award in Europe, the Micra continues to appeal to a wide range of British buyers.
Micras were offered with both petrol and diesel options, paired to either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
PetrolFirst launched in the UK in 1983, the Micra quickly became a favourite with buyers. Its low running costs and charming appeal continued to excite through all five generations. The most recent generation was released in 2017, but Nissan stopped producing the Micra after the 2023 model year, to make room for an electric-only variant in the future.
The fifth-generation Micra was launched in 2017. It came as a five-door hatchback built from the Renault Clio platform. With its floating roof and sharp angles, it had a whole new appeal. More luxury was added to the top-tier levels, such as leather upholstery and an instrument cluster brought from the 370Z.
The 2020 refresh added new headlights to the exterior. The N-Sport also became available with 17-inch wheels, while the interior offered more customisation, including a vibrant orange colour.
The fourth-generation Micra focused on new standard features that modernised the name and brought it up to date with the competition. It also came with more interior room than the third-generation Micra. Styling updates included bigger round headlights, a lower grille that resembled a smile, and a unique bump on the upper grille to mimic a nose.
A 2013 refresh focused mainly on the interior features – a new instrument cluster was added, and the speedometer was put at the forefront of the design. Satellite navigation was added to the top trim, so look out for those models on the used market.

The average Micra fuel tank measures 41 litres. Based on the average mpg ratings, it's safe to assume that the Micra will drive 400 miles or more per tank. Driving conditions, powertrain selection and added features can alter the fuel economy ratings.
The most efficient Micra engine is the 1.5-litre diesel, which is capable of achieving an average fuel economy of 68mpg. The turbocharged 1.0-litre is the most powerful of the newest line-up, offering up to 115bhp.
Before it was discontinued, the Micra was available in four trims: Visia, Accenta, N-Connecta and Tekna. The most popular version was the high-spec Tekna, with the cheapest option being the Visia. Other mid-range trims offer a balance of value and features.
The service recommendations vary based on what model year you drive, but the schedule can be found in the owner's manual. In general, the Micra requires servicing every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
The outgoing models of the Nissan Micra were available with both petrol and diesel powerplants. None of them had hybrid configurations.
The base model comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Otherwise, there's an available CVT that operates as an automatic, providing seamless gear changes for a smooth drive.
The last generation and most models are front-wheel drive only. If you need a small four-wheel drive, take a look at the Suzuki Swift 4x4.
