More Vauxhall Insignia Information
The Insignia range was launched by Vauxhall in 2008. It is a large family car that has been available as a four-door saloon, five-door hatchback and five-door estate (called the Sports Tourer). The German-built range was a step upmarket for Vauxhall and was well received by motoring journalists. It replaced the previous Vectra range and introduced a classier cabin and stylish looks.
The Insignias have featured a wide choice of engines to choose between: ranging from 1.4L to 2.8L, in both petrol and diesel. Top of the range is the high performance turbocharged petrol V6, the Insignia Sports Tourer OPC.
But the Insignia's diesel engines have been particularly acclaimed. Over the recent years these have included 2.0L units with a variety of power outputs. Generally the lower output engines are more economical and the higher output engines are faster.
One of the best balances of performance and economy is the recent 166bhp 2.0 CDTi that can return over 60mpg and takes only nine seconds to accelerate from 0-60mph. The 1.6L Whisper diesel engine is slower but even more economical - at around 75mpg.
These diesels' fuel economy is helped by dedicated technological solutions built into the car, like stop-start technology and active aerodynamic systems.
