Engines and transmissions

Audi has built the A7 with petrol, hybrid and diesel engines, a variety of automatic transmissions, and either front- or four-wheel drive, known as quattro.

Petrol
  • 45 TFSI generates either 241bhp or 261bhp for a 6.0-second 0-60mph time, rated at up to 36mpg, depending on the variant.
  • Plug-in 50 TFSI generates 294bhp for a 6.1-second 0-60mph time and up to 40 miles of electric-only driving.
  • Plug-in hybrid 55 TFSI e offers 361bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time to 5.5 seconds and allowing up to 25 miles of electric-only driving per charge.
  • Hybrid 55 TFSI generates 335bhp, reaches 60mph in 5.1 seconds and has a fuel economy rating of 33.2mpg.
Diesel
  • 40 TDI outputs 201bhp for a 6.8-second 0-60mph time and an efficiency rating of up to 49.7mpg, depending on the variant.
  • Older 3.0-litre TDI engines had various outputs between 227bhp and 344bhp, with fuel economy between 35.8mpg and 39.8mpg.

A diesel-electric mild hybrid was also previously available that produced 281bhp from a 3.0-litre engine and achieved 39.8mpg.

Practicality

The Audi A7 is a practical executive model, designed to offer passengers a comfortable experience while providing top tech features.

Interior space
  • Front seats can have electric adjustments, heating and lumbar support for a more enjoyable drive.
  • Three people fit comfortably in the rear seat, with taller people having more room in the outer seats.
  • ISOFIX mounting points for child seats can be easily accessed through the wide-opening rear doors.
Boot space
  • 535-litre boot is much bigger than the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé and slightly larger than the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
  • 40:20:40 split rear seats allow for carrying rear passengers and longer luggage items.
  • With all of the rear seats down, the boot capacity expands to 1,390 litres.

Safety

  • 2018 Euro NCAP rating was a perfect five stars.
  • 93% given for adult occupant, with child occupant at 85%.
  • Standard kit includes 10 airbags, seat-belt monitoring and pre-sense emergency mitigation technology.

Technology

  • 10.1-inch infotainment display gives access to Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
  • 8.6-inch display sits below the infotainment screen and is used for heating and ventilation.
  • 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display can show speed and other pertinent data, as well as satnav directions.
  • 10-speaker sound system is sufficient, but there's also an available Bang & Olufsen premium system with 16 or 19 speakers attached.

Audi A7 generations

To compete against the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi took the Sportback Concept and turned it into the A7 in 2010. It came with a longer and sleeker body than the A6, but shared a lot of the same design features. Now in its second generation, Audi continues to update the lineup's technology and exterior to ensure that it remains competitive and relevant for today's buyers.

Second Generation (2018 to Present)

With the release of the second generation, Audi made sure that the main design elements of the A7 were carried over, but with some important enhancements. The goal was to improve the look of the A7 with more pronounced contours as well as improve its driving dynamics.

Carrying over the digitalisation from the A8 models, the A7 received upgraded technology. Frameless windows were also carried over, ensuring that the Sportback retained its sleek fastback appearance.

First Generation (2010 to 2018)

The A7 was built to stand out in the luxury car market, with the styling features of an estate wagon, saloon and coupé wrapped into one package. From the front, the A7 had a large single-frame grille, similar to that found on the A8. From the side, the sloping roofline stood out and a retractable rear spoiler gave it a sporty look.

In 2014, a refresh was offered with more striking changes to the bumper and grille, while Matrix LED headlights became available. Unique indicator lights were also added, while the taillights received a redesign.
