In 2013, BMW decided to separate the mid-size two-door coupé bodystyle away from the 3-Series. With the release of the 4-Series also came the high-performance M4 variant. The first models were sold in 2014 and they were available in either convertible or coupé models. Now in its second generation, BMW continues upgrading and updating the lineup with new technologies and features, ensuring that the lineup remains competitive.

Why buy a used BMW M4?
If you're in the market for a car that's powerful, stylish and premium, then a used BMW M4 is a great choice. With incredible acceleration and excellent handling, the M4 provides a thrilling driving experience without sacrificing any of the comfort, luxury and technology that BMW cars are known for. Seating for four and a choice between a manual and automatic gearbox are just some of the additional perks that sports cars don't offer but a used M4 does.

Engines and transmissions
BMW has only offered petrol engines with the M4, along with a manual or an automatic gearbox. Used M4 examples can be found with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, depending on the age.
Petrol- 3.0-litre powertrain outputs either 502bhp or 522bhp for a 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds or 3.4 seconds (RWD).
- Fuel economy is 28.8mpg for the 502bhp variant and slightly lower at up to 28.2mpg for the 522bhp variant.
- CSL special edition increases power to 543bhp due to the reduced weight, hitting 60mph in 3.6 seconds while offering a fuel economy of 28.5mpg.
- Older models produced 424bhp or 444bhp with the Competition Package.
- Top speed can reach 180mph with an available package that also includes carbon-ceramic brakes.
Practicality
Even though the BMW M4 is a two-door sports car, it's actually relatively practical, with seating to hold up to four people and a reasonably large boot.
Interior space- Newer models are longer than the older versions, giving more passenger room.
- Sloping roofline does cut into the headroom slightly, but there's no problem putting children in the back.
- Available carbon bucket front seats offer more support and comfort.
- 440-litre boot has 35 litres more capacity than the previous model and far more than what's offered with the Mercedes-AMG C63.
- Standard electric tailgate makes loading cargo easier.
- Two-door convertible includes a high-quality fabric soft top.
- Two-door coupé has a fixed roof that can't be lowered.
Safety
- Perfect five-star rating given by Euro NCAP in 2019.
- Adult occupant rating is 97%, while the vulnerable road users rating is 93%.
- Available technology includes front collision warning, a head-up display and lane departure warning.
Technology
- 10.1-inch infotainment system is easy to see even in sunlight.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection are available.
- 12.3-inch digital driver display shows key information.
BMW M4 generations
Second Generation (2020 to Present)
With the launch of a new generation, BMW added a larger kidney grille to the front of the M4. New vents were also added to the front bumper sides for better brake cooling. BMW designed the silhouette of the M4 to look like the 8 Series. Two years later, BMW released the Competition Sport Lightweight (CSL) variant with 110kg less weight and carbon fibre elements.
A 2024 refresh changed the styling of the M4, giving it a striking appearance. Additional horsepower was also put into the engine, ensuring that it was more exciting to drive.

First Generation (2014 to 2020)
Since the 1980s, the M3, a sports car designed for touring, had been extremely popular. However, there was a demand for a coupé variant of the M3, which is why the M4 was launched in 2014. It was essentially the same as the M3 except for the body on top.
The M4 had a bolder appearance than the standard 4-Series with its big open grille for engine cooling and its aerodynamic design. It was also available in both coupé and convertible bodystyles, giving enthusiasts more of a selection. During its first generation, it remained relatively unchanged except for some minor tweaks.

Used BMW M4 FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the BMW M4?
Throughout its history, the BMW M4 has only been offered with one engine option, though the output can vary depending on the variant and the packages attached to it. All M4 models have a petrol engine. Overall, the 522bhp engine offers plenty of power and acceleration.
Which are the most popular model variants?
Most used M4s are the standard variant, rather than the competition, however this still offers numerous features as standard. These include climate control, front heated seats, Merino leather upholstery and a Harman Kardon sound system. However, the M4 Competition is more powerful and the newer generation is only available in this specification.
What optional extras should I look out for?
You should look out for models with updated interiors, such as Alcantara leather with black and grey stitching. Also, it's possible to find an adaptive M exhaust and special 20-inch alloy wheels.
Is the BMW M4 a good family car?
Even though the M4 is a two-door coupé or convertible, there's room to hold four people in the cabin. The back seats have less headroom because of the sloping roofline, so it may be best to put children in the rear. Also, the M4 has an ample amount of boot space, larger than the Mercedes-AMG C63.
Is there a hybrid version of the BMW M4?
No, BMW hasn't introduced a hybrid variant of the M4. All models include a high-powered petrol engine.
Is the BMW M4 available as an automatic?
All newer M4 models come with a standard automatic transmission. There are older models with a manual gearbox, but these are much harder to find in the used car market, and are sought after by enthusiasts.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
It's possible to find both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive examples of a used BMW M4. The four-wheel drive variant is harder to find among used cars, but it does offer better traction on slippery or uneven surfaces.
