Engines and transmissions

BMW offers the new X6 with both petrol and diesel engine options, a standard automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

Petrol

xDrive40i creates 335bhp for a 5.4-second 0-60mph time and an efficiency rating around 28mpg.
M60i generates 522bhp, offering a 0-60mph time of 4.2 seconds, but dropping efficiency to 24.6mpg.
The M Competition 4.4-litre variant produces 616bhp and a 0-60mph of 3.8 seconds.

Diesel

xDrive40d outputs 335bhp, taking the vehicle to 60mph in 5.3 seconds and offering efficiency of between 38.7 and 41.5mpg.
Depending on the trim, the xDrive30d features slightly less power at 293bhp, but still achieves 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds and boosts efficiency of up to 39.8mpg.
Older M50d available with 375bhp and a 0-60mph time of 5 seconds.

Practicality

While the BMW X6 isn't as practical as the X5, the interior space is substantial, and the seating offers comfort for daily usage.

Interior space

Earlier models feature four seats, with second and third generation upgrading to five seats.
Newer models feature standard heated front seats and an electrically adjustable driver's seat.
Rear seat holds two adults comfortably, with the middle seat reserved for a child.
Wide-open rear doors and ISOFIX points make it easier for fitting child seats.

Boot space

580-litre boot with the rear seats up.
1,530 litres available when the back row is folded down.
Optional air suspension lowers the rear of the vehicle to help with loading and unloading.

Safety

The BMW X6 has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP.
Safety features include Forward Collision Warning, Preventative Pedestrian Protection and Lane Departure Warning technology.
Available self-parking technology increases ease of movement in tight spaces.

Technology

Dual screens are combined into one unit, with a 12.3-inch driver display and a curved 14.9-inch infotainment system.

Different generations of used BMW X6

BMW refers to the X6 as a 'Sports Activity Coupé' because it mixes the coupé body with the stance of an SUV. It was first unveiled and added to the BMW SUV lineup in 2008, making it the third installment after the X3 and X5, both of which were well-received. Now in its third generation, BMW continues to upgrade technological and stylistic features in order to keep it relevant and fresh.

Third Generation (2019 to 2014)

With the launch of the latest generation, BMW settled on a sharper, bolder style with 22-inch rims and front-grille lights. New high-tech features were also added to the interior, including the Live Cockpit Professional, a personal AI assistant and dual 12-inch screens.

By 2023, BMW felt that a refresh was necessary and provided a slight facelift. The new bumper accented the broader lower grille and slim air inlets. The headlights were also redesigned to include V-shaped integrated turn signals and daytime running lights.

Second Generation (2014 to 2019)

Sharing the platform of the X5, the X6 had its own unique shape with a defined headlight design and smaller vertical slats on the grille. The front bumper was made larger and a second grille was added to the bottom that helped cool the engine. The sculptured lines and sloped roofline made it look more like a coupé.

While previous versions only came as a four-seater, BMW upgraded the style to include three rear seats. New technology was also added with a pop-up infotainment screen. Finally, the engine options were refined, ensuring that they were as efficient and powerful as possible.

First Generation (2008 to 2014)

Following the previous success of the X3 and X5, BMW saw a demand for a sportier SUV design, prompting the company to release the X6 with its coupé-like features. A regular bumper came as standard, but there was also an available lower grille with a rectangular shape, similar to the M Package style. It also contained a trapezoidal air intake with oversized scoops to house the fog lamps. Under the X6 was an underbody plate for a sporty look.

A refresh in 2009 upgraded the engines to meet new Euro5 emission standards, while some 2010 changes included redesigned headlights. BMW also added a new hood that had a power dome for the M and Active Hybrid variants.
