Engines and transmissions

As well as the common petrol and diesel options, there was also a rare electric powertrain available with the Fiat Panda. All recent models offer a manual or an automatic transmission and front- or four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Newest models only have a 1.0-litre three-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology to generate 69bhp and return an efficiency rating of up to 58.9mpg.
  • Older 1.2-litre creates either 60bhp or 69bhp with a combined fuel economy rating of between 50mpg and 57mpg.
  • 0.9-litre TwinAir (also found in the Fiat 500) produces 83bhp with a claimed combined figure of up to 57.6mpg.
Diesel
  • Older diesel models used a 1.3-litre Multijet engine generating 70bhp for an efficiency rating of up to 65mpg.

Practicality

The compact Panda does not offer a huge amount of space, but for its size, there's a lot more room than it appears to have.

Interior space
  • Front seats are supportive and comfortable, with an adjustable steering wheel for more personalisation.
  • Two adults can fit in the back seat, but it's better suited for children.
  • Rear bench seat can be slid forward or backward to add more passenger or boot space.
Boot space
  • 225 to 260 litres of boot space, depending on where the rear seat is situated.
  • With the rear seats folded down, the load space is 870 litres.
Bodystyles
  • Five-door hatchback is the typical model; this has been available through the entire life of the lineup.
  • Three-door hatchback was available in the earlier years.

Safety

  • The Panda received zero stars during 2018 Euro NCAP testing.
  • All four crash test categories (adult occupant, child occupant, vulnerable road users and safety assist) were rated under 50%.
  • Available front side airbags and autonomous emergency braking increase protection.

Technology

  • 7.0-inch infotainment system replaces the plain display of older models.
  • Available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto help drivers remain connected.

Fiat Panda generations

The very first Panda arrived in 1981 to provide a way to navigate cities at a lower price. This model remained in production through to 2003 until another generation was released. Now, the Fiat Panda is in its third generation and has received a lot of upgrades. While it's still a small city car, Fiat has done a great job of maximising the space and creating options for the interior.

First Generation (1981-2003)

The Fiat Panda was released in order to provide an affordable vehicle that was also stylish and practical. Fiat decided to settle on a model with a completely flat floor that maximised interior space. Its boxy design had an asymmetrical grille that changed depending on the engine.

In 1986, the Panda received a facelift, both visually and technically. Fiat decided to upgrade the rear suspension, making the car more enjoyable to drive.

Second Generation (2003-2011)

After more than two decades, a new generation of the Panda was released in 2003. Already, there had been more than four million units sold, so Fiat knew that it didn't need to make many changes. Still, some new exterior styling added a modern touch, such as the narrow two-slat grille sitting between the square headlights.

In 2006, Fiat released the special Panda 100hp, giving the lineup a hot-hatch variant. This model has more power, and also enhanced styling. The black rectangular grille may be the first component that stands out from the rest of the lineup. Finally, the suspension was stiffened up and the ground clearance was reduced for sportier handling.

Third Generation (2012 to Present)

Moving into a new generation, the Fiat Panda received some exterior upgrades, including updated headlights with integrated turn signal indicators. A slimmer grille was added with the Fiat logo placed right in the centre. The main cooling area on the bumper was crossed with a fatter horizontal slat and fog lamps were also available.

In the cabin, Fiat created a dashboard that was nearly vertical and provided larger dials for the instrument cluster. The company also revised some of the powertrains, ensuring that there were enough options available.

Used Fiat Panda FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Fiat Panda?

The petrol engines have been the most popular by far thanks to its already low running costs, ease of maintenance and cheaper purchase price.

Which are the most popular model variants?

The Fiat Panda can be purchased new in the following model variants: Panda, Garmin, Red and Top. Older models came in the Pop and Easy models. The Easy tends to be the most popular because it's cheap to buy and comes with a six-speaker sound system, start-stop technology and air conditioning.

What optional extras should I look out for?

To increase the safety of the Panda, we highly recommend looking for a model with parking sensors and autonomous emergency braking. There are also different wheel designs to look for, and air conditioning would be a bonus on hot days.

Is the Fiat Panda a good family car?

Even as a city car, the Fiat Panda has a surprising amount of interior space thanks to its boxy design. Children can fit in the back seats with ease, and there is room for some luggage in the boot. The Panda is a good low-cost option for families.

Is there a hybrid version of the Fiat Panda?

Fiat hasn't released full hybrid Panda yet, but there's a petrol engine option that comes with mild-hybrid technology. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder generates 69bhp and has an efficiency rating of up to 58.9mpg.

Is the Fiat Panda available as an automatic?

Yes, but the automatic models are difficult to find among used cars. Most of the Fiat Panda models come with a manual gearbox, which helps to keep the purchase cost to a minimum.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Yes, Fiat has offered the Panda with both a front- and four-wheel drive configuration. Both are easy to find among used models.
