The Jeep Wrangler automatic's rugged looks date back all the way to the Second World War. Like its British counterpart the Land Rover Defender, it's brilliant at battling through the most challenging off-road conditions, but that all-terrain ability comes at the expense of on-road comfort.
The Wrangler is only available with a 197bhp 2.8L turbodiesel tied to a low-geared five-speed automatic box. There's also a 280bhp 3.6L V6 petrol engine available by special order if you desperately want a manual gearbox. Economy and emissions are slightly better than a Defender.
The equipment in the Wrangler matches its utilitarian character - this is not a luxury 4x4. That said, Sahara models come with hill descent control, automatic headlights and a premium stereo system, while Overland trim adds leather upholstery, heated front seats and 16 inch alloys. You also get a choice of soft and hard tops.
The Jeep Wrangler automatic is available in two and four-door versions, the former with just enough room for four adults, the latter with enough space for five. You can find a great choice of used Wrangler automatics on Motors.co.uk.
