The Kia Rio 2014 facelift by Audi's Paul Schreyer means this former ugly duckling is now in the same style league as the more expensive Ford Focus and Volkswagen Polo, as well as the Hyundai i20 and Vauxhall Corsa.

The new Rio claims to be able to deliver combined fuel economy figures of 88.3mpg with its 74bhp 1.1L turbodiesel, making it one of the most economical standard-engine production cars in the world. The range is completed by an 89bhp 1.4L turbodiesel and two petrol engines: an 84bhp 1.25L and a 107bhp 1.4L. The bigger petrol offers the best performance while delivering a decent 53mpg.

Standard kit in the new Rio is good, with the entry-level £1' offering electric front windows and a Bluetooth stereo, plus air-conditioning in the £1 Air'. The mid-range £2' adds leather trim, alloys and fog lamps, and luxurious £3' gives you heated front seats, cruise control and rear privacy glass.

In the driver's seat, the Rio offers best-in-class headroom, and there's space in the back for all but the tallest adults. The boot is bigger than the outgoing model too, with a 60/40 split rear seat offering extra space if needed.
