Engines and transmissions

Since its introduction, the Kia Stonic has offered varied powertrain options that have included diesel, petrol and mild-hybrid setups, with an automatic or a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 1.0-litre turbocharged T-GDi engine produces 98bhp for a 0-62mph time of 10.7 seconds and an efficiency rating of 51.4mpg.
  • 1.4-litre MPi also produces 98bhp, but the fuel economy rating is reduced to 44.8mpg.
  • 1.0-litre mild-hybrid increases the output to 118bhp for a reduced 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds, returning an efficiency rating averaging 50.4mpg.
Diesel
  • Older 1.6-litre diesel engine creates 108bhp for a 0-60mph time of 10.9 seconds and an efficiency rating of 67mpg.
  • 114bhp 1.6-litre variant increased the fuel economy to 56.5mpg.

Practicality

The Stonic is a practical daily driver for a single person or couple, though small children can fit in the back seat without a problem.

Interior space
  • Front seats are comfortable for adults shorter than six feet, with plenty of adjustability available.
  • Adults can fit in the back seat for a short distance, but it is better suited for children.
  • Two ISOFIX mounting points for installing child seats in the back row.
Boot space
  • 352-litre boot has a wide opening for easier loading.
  • Rear seats can be folded down to gain a total of 1,155 litres of space.
  • Low loading lip means that it is easier to load heavy objects.

Safety

  • Expired 2017 Euro NCAP rating was three out of five stars.
  • Adult occupant and child occupant ratings were 85% and 84%, respectively.
  • Standard kit includes automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, pedestrian and cyclist detection and lane keeping assist.

Technology

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display included with standard technology, along with Bluetooth and a DAB radio.
  • Phone connection is also possible via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • Available satnav system removes the need to use a phone app for navigation.

Kia Stonic generations

In 2017, Kia added to its crossover range with the Stonic, which was smaller than the Sorento and Sportage. It was released on the same platform as the Kia Rio hatchback, and was designed to compete against the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke crossovers.

Its tiger nose grille helps it to stand out from the rest of Kia's lineup, while there are more personalisation options available. While the Stonic is still in its first generation, Kia has done a great job of offering high-tech equipment and several powertrain options.

Used Kia Stonic FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Kia Stonic?

The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine has been the most popular due to its spritely performance. This engine is still quite efficient, with a fuel economy rating of up to 51.4mpg.

Which are the most popular model variants?

The newest Stonic can be purchased in four variants: 2, GT-Line, 3 and GT-Line S. Of these, the '2' is the most popular because of its value. Even though it's the lowest-priced option, it still comes with air conditioning, electric windows and rear parking sensors.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for privacy glass, and there is also a reversing camera that offers more visibility. Customers who do a lot of driving when it's cold may also want to consider the heated front seats and steering wheel.

Is the Kia Stonic a good family car?

While we wouldn't recommend the Stonic for families with older children, it would be a great option for growing families who have small children. It's easy to fit two child seats in the back and the boot space is decent for its class.

Is there a hybrid version of the Kia Stonic?

While there isn't a full-blown plug-in hybrid Stonic variant yet, mild-hybrid technology is available. This configuration ensures an output of 118bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds and an efficiency rating of 50.4mpg.

Is the Kia Stonic available as an automatic?

Yes, Kia has built and sold plenty of Stonics with an automatic transmission. While they aren't difficult to find among used cars, the manual transmission model is much more popular. Automatics tend to be slightly more expensive to buy vs manual cars on the used market.

Is there a four-wheel drive version of the Stonic?

As with most cars in this segment, the Kia Stonic only comes with a front-wheel drive configuration. Front-wheel drive helps to keep down the vehicle's weight, ensuring more efficiency, and it is a lower-priced option than a comparable model with four-wheel drive.
