Nissan Serena

The Nissan Serena is a people carrier with a chequered history. Starting out as a small MPV, it has grown to be quite a whopper in the modern era. Well designed with a good build quality, it’s a nice Japanese alternative to a motoring genre that has become quite stagnant. Those people who like to deviate from the norm will more than enjoy this one.

Yes, when it was first released in 1991, the original Serena was rather small and punchy, with some conservative designs and a sloth of an engine. However as the years progressed and further generations were released, it transformed into a big brute of a people carrier that really looks the part and is ideal for large families. While the Serena is hugely popular in Japan and Asia, it was actually replaced with the Primastar in the UK, so an element of exclusivity remains if you can get hold of one.

In all honesty the first few generations were poor on the style front, but modern versions are anything but. The third generation in particular was a real monster and had a front end like boxing glove with holes in it. Flowing curves and big windows however give the latest models a nice appearance, and the transition from bonnet to roof is rather sleek. The interior is spacious, well stocked with storage areas and flexible for family motoring. With a nicely futuristic cockpit, there’s a good amount of kit and overall the finish is of high quality.

It’s nice to drive and is most at home cruising around at a normal pace. Visiting the shops, taking the kids to school or doing odd jobs is what it’s most happy with, and despite its hulking size, it’s easy to live with. Decent all around handling, the ride is comfy and you get ample power from the selection of petrol and diesel engines without pushing fuel consumption into the red zone.

While the latest generations of the Serena are quite rare on British roads, you’ve got a better than average chance of finding a good one for less here at Motors.co.uk. That said, there’s no lack of older models, and considering the huge price discounts you’ll receive, any used Nissan Serena will be a fantastic bargain. Pre owned cars for sale are always the best deals, so what’s the point in considering anything else?

Clearly then, the Nissan Serena is a big MPV that’s an excellent alternative to some popular European brands. It looks nice, is excellent inside and drives well too. While it might be difficult to find the latest versions, perseverance is the key because it’s well worth it in the end. People on a tight budget will find previous generations exceptional value for money however.
