Peugeot 106

Over the years Peugeot has produced some of the best and most popular super mini cars around. It has a knack for cramming a lot into very little space, whether it’s equipment, performance or even character. The 106 is a perfect example of what the French brand can do, and was one of the most sought after cars of its time. It remains a great little motor for people on a shoestring budget who want to have some fun.

The 106 was produced from 1991 to 2004, and was an immediate success due to its small size, quirky appearance, and hugely rewarding driving experience. For a mini auto it certainly packed a fair sized punch, and the array of different versions catered for all sorts of motorists; from super frugal entry level models to super powered GTI ones, the Peugeot had a large bag of tricks.

In terms of design, the 106 looks sprightly and excitable from the outside, and its small proportions give it a friendly appearance. Newer models in particular looked lively and raring to go with front headlights that almost wink. The interior is quite sparse but nonetheless solid. While there’s a basic amount of kit in bottom end models, the top end ones have a better spec. Despite the cabin being rather cramped, it doesn’t matter as everything is secondary to the driving experience anyway.

Out on the road the Peugeot is a fantastic amount of fun. Perfectly balanced, you can throw it around and it’ll keep going no matter what. The steering is sharp and precise, there’s good grip in the corners, and the ride is firm but fair. The GTI in particular is a real driver’s car that can transform even the shortest of journeys into a spectacular experience.

These days it’s so easy to find a used Peugeot 106 as they seem to grow on trees. Having been out of production for a few years, prices aren’t that high, and at you’ll get the benefit of big reductions too. What this means is that you’ll pay a miniscule amount and come away with a terrific little car. There’s no better way to bag a bargain.

So with the Peugeot 106 you get a whole lot of fun in a tiny package. It’s a great supermini hatchback that relishes the chance to be driven and never fails to delight. While it might be somewhat cramped inside, it’s the ideal solution for young drivers, city dwellers or people on a budget who want something special. You won’t be disappointed that’s for sure!
