Used Peugeot 308 information

Engines and transmissions

Over the years, Peugeot has built the 308 with diesel, petrol and hybrid powertrains. Most recently, the company released the E-308, which is an all-electric model. While both manual or automatic gearboxes are available, all 308s come with front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 1.2-litre PureTech produces 129bhp and has an efficiency rating of up to 51.9mpg.
  • Hybrid 136 generates 134bhp but offers a rating of up to 62.6mpg for more efficiency.
  • Plug-in hybrid models use a 12.4kWh battery to produce 177bhp for up to 44 miles of driving on electric-only power.
  • More powerful GT trim plug-in offers 221bhp, but the electric driving range is reduced to 40 miles per charge.
  • Older 1.2-litre engines offered outputs from 81 to 129bhp, while the GT had a 1.6-litre that was rated at 202bhp and the GTi produced 268bhp.
Diesel
  • 1.5 BlueHDI 130 outputs 129bhp and has an efficiency rating of up to 59.6mpg.
  • Older 1.6-litre offered 98bhp or 118bhp, with the higher-powered engine boasting 91.1mpg combined.
  • Second-gen models have a 2.0-litre engine, which produce for 147bhp or 174bhp, depending on the trim.

Practicality

The Peugeot 308 may not be as roomy as a large SUV, but for its size, there's enough room for everyone to be comfortable.

Interior space
  • Room for five adults across the two rows, although the middle rear seat is a little smaller.
  • ISOFIX points are placed behind zipper covers and are available to secure child seats.
  • Large rear windows allow added light into the cabin to create a more inviting space.
Boot space
  • 412-litre boot is larger than the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus.
  • 1,323 litres of space available with the rear bench folded flat is more than in the Hyundai i30, SEAT Leon and Toyota Corolla.
  • Hybrid models have 50 fewer litres of space.
  • Underfloor storage creates more space.
Bodystyles
  • 5-door hatchback has been available through entire lineup.
  • 2-door convertible (308 CC) was available for a few years.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP rating is four stars.
  • Child occupant is the highest of the four at 84%.
  • Standard safety kit includes an array of airbags and autonomous emergency braking.

Technology

  • Large 10.0-inch centre touchscreen display keeps the cabin modern and up to date.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offer more connectivity.
  • Available 3D navigation adds more functionality.

Peugeot 308 generations

The Peugeot 308 arrived in 2008 to replace the 307 and previous hatchback models, even though they shared the same platform. Originally, it was available in a five-door hatchback and 2-door convertible (308 CC) variants. Since its introduction, the Peugeot has been through three generations, each bringing more style, features and affordability to the market.

Third Generation (2021 to Present)

The third generation 308 is the first from the company's lineup to include the new logo, featuring a lion's head. It also earned some styling features borrowed from the larger 3008, such as a big mesh grille giving it an aggressive appearance. The company added some design elements that made it more aerodynamic and reduced its drag-resistance factor for better fuel economy on motorways.

Inside the cabin, Peugeot went with a minimalistic dashboard and a low-mounted steering wheel. Several displays were included to modernise the interior and a split-folding bench was added in the rear.

Second Generation (2014 to 2021)

With the release of the second generation, Peugeot made the 308 more practical. Its weight was reduced by 140kg with the new platform and a narrower grille was added. With this update, the boot size also increased to make it more accommodating. In 2014, the GT was released, while the GTi followed one year later.

In 2017, Peugeot issued a refresh but there wasn't a lot to change, considering that the 308 won the title of Car of the Year in Europe previously. The only recognisable update on the outside was the LED daytime running lights, while the interior earned a more advanced infotainment system. The GT adopted new headlights, taillights and bumpers, while the GTi had a lower stance with the ground clearance being reduced by another half inch.

First Generation (2007 to 2014)

As a brand-new model, the 308 five-door hatchback instantly became a top contender among compacts. Built on the same platform as the 307, the updated version had unique styling that made it more modern and appealed to a broader market. Sticking with similar touches, Peugeot included the feline-style headlights, but the grille was moved to the bottom of the bumper.

Bucket seats adorned the front of the 308 and it had a high seating position to give everyone plenty of legroom. Gauges and interior touches closely resemble those from the Volkswagen Golf, which added to the model's popularity.

Which is the most popular engine in the Peugeot 308?

There are nearly an equal amount of petrol and diesel engine options in the used 308 selection, with both engines proving popular among 308 drivers. What are the most popular model variants?

The newest lineup includes the Active, Allure and GT model variants. The Allure has been the most popular, offering a mixture between value and features. The newest models include upgraded 17-inch wheels, a sat-nav system and a 180-degree reversing camera.

What optional extras should I look out for?

18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels give the 308 a unique look, along with the full matrix LED headlights. You can also enjoy a larger 10.0-inch instrument panel and eight-colour ambient lighting.

Is the Peugeot 308 a good family car?
