If you're in the market for a car that's fun to drive, powerful and incredibly stylish, then a used Porsche Boxster is a great choice. The two-seater soft-top convertible gives new meaning to sports cars with its mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. Serving as inspiration for numerous other sports cars that followed, the Boxster is unique and ready to take on your favourite driving roads.
Since its introduction, the Porsche Boxster has been available with petrol engines, a manual or automatic gearbox, and rear-wheel drive.
PetrolThe Porsche Boxster is fun to drive and cheaper than some other models from the brand, making used examples an attractive and relatively affordable prospect. With two seats only, it is not the most practical car in the world.
Interior spacePorsche wanted to try out a new concept of sports car in 1996 with the release of the original Boxster, known as the 986 Boxster. Porsche named it the Boxster to mix the terms 'boxer', based on the engine configuration, and 'roadster', indicating its body style. The car immediately became a success, with three other generations following it until the arrival of the 718 Boxster in 2016.
When the third generation of the Boxster was launched, it became lighter, quicker, wider and longer than previous models. It also had a different design from the previous versions, with sleeker headlamps replacing the round ones. Also, oval-shaped exhausts replaced the previously rounded tips.
Inside the cabin, there were some further upgrades, including a new 7.0-inch touchscreen display and infotainment unit. Porsche also added a 4.6-inch display to the right of the instrument cluster for better visibility.
There were sweeping changes made to the second-generation Boxster, including redesigned headlights and new front air intakes. The engine options remained similar, though the interior design was heavily modernised. Leather upholstery was a standard feature, along with classy touches such as wood and aluminium trim.
A 2008 refresh brought new technological advancements and aesthetic changes. Clear headlights were now available, while LED features and rectangular fog lights became standard. A new CD radio was also added with an optional navigation system available. These later models are more desirable on the used market.
Porsche released the Boxster in 1998 as a cheaper alternative to the 911. With the lower driving position, smaller engine and excellent on-road capability, some 911 owners even switched over to the Boxster when it was introduced. Both models had similar exterior and interior styling at the time.
A mild facelift in 2002 brought a new style that built off the original design. It now included two air intakes and improved engine options.

Over the years, there have been many different petrol engines offered to customers. The base models have proven to be the most cost-effective, making them popular with value-conscious drivers, while the higher models offer more speed and excitement.
The models offered with the Porsche Boxster lineup directly relate to the engine that's included. Different model variants include the S, RS, GTS and Black Edition, which offer different compositions for different power. The base S models remain popular among Boxster owners as they still offer plenty of interior features and powerful driving. However, more expensive variants have also been popular because of the added speed and more aggressive styling.
Customers should look out for Bluetooth, which is a great add-on, creating more flexible connectivity. There were also features such as a digital radio, cruise control and parking sensors that were available with some models.
The Porsche Boxster was the name of the model through the first three generations, from 1998 until 2016. From 2017, the model name was changed to the 718 Boxster, which is the most current lineup of the sports car.
There is not currently a hybrid version of the Boxster.
There has been an automatic gearbox offered with some Porsche Boxster engines. Look out for models with "PDK" in the name - this means it's an automatic. Manual versions remain the enthusiasts' choice, and plenty are available on the used car market.
All Porsche Boxster cars are built with rear-wheel drive. This configuration ensures sporty handling, especially while cornering.
