At the start of this model, Renault discontinued the three-door hatchback and estate bodystyles due to low sales. Those changes meant that the popular R.S. model would become a five-door hatchback and only come with an automatic gearbox. Renault also streamlined the engine options, leaving every Clio with a turbocharged motor.

A facelift occurred in 2016 with slightly updated exterior styling. The range was also cut down in 2018, leaving just three trims: Play, Iconic and GT Line.

Starting in 2005, the size of the Clio was increased, providing more interior room for the driver and passengers. The interior was adorned with more luxurious materials, though they will feel slightly outdated compared to modern iterations of the Clio. Comfort was the focus, with drivers reporting a smoother ride and more enjoyable driving experience.
