The Skoda Roomster diesel may look unusual from the outside but the tall, boxy profile and mismatched windows make a lot more sense once you're inside. Here, you'll find the large glass area and generous headroom make for a uniquely spacious and practical family car.
You can choose from three Roomster diesels: an economical 74bhp 1.4L and a 1.6L developing 89 or 104bhp. Greenline II models using the 1.4L can deliver over 67mpg, but the bigger diesels will offer better performance. The chassis is taken from the Skoda Fabia, which makes the Roomster a fun drive, with sharp steering, a supple ride and lots of grip around corners.
The basic Roomster comes with electric front windows and a CD stereo with a plug for MP3 players, while the SE adds air-conditioning, electric windows throughout, sunroof and parking sensors, and the SE Plus gives you climate control, alloys and roof rails. Scout models offer an off-road styling kit but no actual four-wheel drive.
Space and practicality are where Roomsters excel, with lots of head and legroom front and back. There are three separate rear seats, although the centre seat is smaller. Remove it and the two remaining seats slide and recline for the perfect balance of passenger comfort and luggage space.
