If you like the look of the Mercedes M-Class 4x4 but don’t really have the money, the SsangYong Rexton is a perfect value alternative. Heavily based on its German counterpart, the Rexton is a mid size SUV from one of the least well known South Korean motoring manufacturers. But just because you may not have heard the name doesn’t mean this is a second rate car- it's fully loaded with equipment, a powerhouse off road and a real can do type of motor.
First released in 2001, the SsangYong is ideal for families living in areas with rough terrain. It's a muscular 4 door SUV that's armed with engines made under license from Mercedes and also shares some design similarities and the general shape of the M-Class. An array of generations has been released since its introduction and there are also some tuned special edition versions such as the Rexton R-Line and Intercar RX 400. A formidable off roader, the Rexton has quite a hardy setup that lets it dominate anything from icy conditions to muddy fields.
All there is to say about the exterior design is that it's big and bold. It's pretty plain to be honest, although the front grille is a nice addition. Unfussy and businesslike, it does what it says in the brochure. Spacious and comfortable inside, there's enough room for 5 people to relax. It's a big boy for sure, and that means no lack of boot space which is ideal for carrying luggage, shopping or even large dogs. While the cabin isn’t at all related to Mercedes, there's still a fantastic amount of kit, and everything is put together well. Basically it's just as modest as the outside, but is very functional.
Like many other excellent off road cars, the SssangYong isn’t the most refined on tarmac. The ride is firm and the steering is quite dull, but it gets the job done and upgraded models are much more nimble. Take it on the rough stuff though and it's phenomenal; rivers, hills, sand, dirt, and probably mountain tops pose no trouble for it. Happily telling Mother Nature where to get off, this car really doesn't hold back.
This car is unbelievably good value for money. In fact it's better than that- the overall package is epic. Buying second hand lets you push the envelope even further however as prices are significantly lower. At Motors.co.uk there's every reason to get excited as the number of bargains available is staggering. High quality and some of the lowest prices around enable you to catch a whale of a used SsangYong Rexton.
The simple fact is that when it comes to 4x4s, this one is one of the best off road cars for sale around. While it’s not particularly exciting to look at and doesn’t have much design flair, it’s packed full of kit, has a huge cabin and is superbly comfortable. Add in the adequate on road experience and truly titanic ride on hard terrain and really this is one of the best value for money SUVs money can buy.
