The Corolla is most often found with one of the self-charging petrol hybrid configurations that help the car to be as efficient as possible. There are some petrol models among used cars, but it can be difficult to find any with a diesel engine.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Currently, Toyota offers the Corolla in four variants: Icon, Design, GR Sport and Excel. The most popular among used models is the Icon Tech with upgraded technology to the base. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of equipment.

What optional extras should I look out for?

You can find upgraded wheel designs, including the 18-inch bi-tone alloy wheels. A head-up display and high-tech safety features are also available, including rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.

Engines and transmissions

While Toyota has offered automatic and manual transmissions, along with diesel, hybrid and petrol engines, all models have included standard front-wheel drive.

Petrol

1.8-litre self-charging hybrid makes 138bhp for a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds.
2.0-litre self-charging hybrid increases the output to 193bhp with a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds.
Both modern engines return a fuel economy rating of up to 64.1mpg, while the 2.0-litre has CO2 emissions of 98g/km.
Earlier 1.2-litre engine produced 114bhp and achieved 58.2mpg, emitting around 116g/km of CO2.

Diesel

Older models have a variety of diesel models, including a 89bhp 1.4-litre with a 58mpg rating.
2.0-litre generates between 89bhp and 114bhp, offering a fuel economy rating ranging between 45mpg and 49mpg.

Practicality

The Toyota Corolla is a compact model that's practical for travel in urban environments and when space isn't a priority.

Interior space

Driver's positioning is adjustable with various materials available, including leather.
Rear seat is better suited for children or shorter adults.
ISOFIX points for installing child seats are easy to access in the rear seat.

Boot space

361-litre boot available with 1.8-litre models (313 litres with the 2.0-litre).
Rear seat folds down to accommodate 1,052 litres in 1.8-litre models (1,004 with the 2.0-litre).
Boot space features tie-downs and shopping bag hooks.

Bodystyles

Three-door hatchback is the sportiest option.
Five-door liftback is better for families who need quicker access to the backseat.
Four-door saloon has more of an executive appeal.
Five-door estate has a larger body with more space for luggage.

2019 Euro NCAP rating was five out of five stars.
95% rating for adult occupant, with 86% for vulnerable road users and 84% for child occupant.
Standard kit includes automatic LED headlights, seven airbags, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.

8.0-inch infotainment screen was upgraded to 10.5 inches in 2023.
12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is found on newer models with various display options.
