BMW 8-Series

If you want a 2 door performance coupe and aren’t impressed with the current crop, turning back the clock could be a good idea. The BMW 8-Series is a blast from the past and is the definition of ‘conspicuous consumption’. You only have to lay eyes on it to realise that it’s going to be a beast and will probably drink petrol like it’s going out of fashion. Despite this though, in terms of overall appeal, it’s right up there with the best, and proves that ‘old school’ doesn’t mean compromise.

Over 30,000 8 series cars were produced between 1989 and 1999, which is a comparatively small number, so exclusivity was part of the appeal. A real supercar, it was BMW’s flagship and was available with V8 or V12 engines that produced power akin to an atom bomb. Substantial investment in technology went into this car, and electronic throttles, increased engine power, tiny drag coefficients and specialised axels were the results. Down to the tiniest details, this car was made for performance, and range of models defies belief. From the ‘entry level’ 830i to the 850 C Si, the M8 and the Alpina B12, all you can do is stare in amazement.

It looks awesome from the outside with a very low, sharp and sleek profile. The wonderful popup headlights like those on the legendary M1 are a fantastic addition. A powerful looking brute, the best way to describe it is ‘phwoar!’ From a muscular exterior, to a comfortable and generous interior, the 8 Series is full of surprises. With its 2+2 seat layout, there’s quite a lot of cabin space and the seats are very comfortable indeed. Lots of lavish materials and fabrics from the era adorn every surface and overall it’s very upmarket. An impressive amount of kit even for modern standards, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t feel totally at ease or at home in this car.

The performance and driving experience are breathtaking, to be straight to the point. Frighteningly fast and yet quite easy to handle, the BMW is a real driver’s car. The firm ride lets you know you haven’t yet reached driving heaven, although the rate at which things flash by, especially in the V12 version, you feel like time travel is imminent. Relatively accurate steering, big brakes and ABS give you confidence, but the roar of the engine is enough to bring a tear to your eye with happiness.

Look, this car isn’t one you’d find on every street corner, so you could be forgiven for thinking it’d be quite a task to locate one suitable for buying. Luckily for you, Motors.co.uk makes it incredibly easy as there are thousands of different second hand cars for sale of all shapes, sizes, marques and rarities. If there’s a quality used BMW 8 Series out there, the odds of it being listed at Motors are very high indeed. The kicker is that big price reductions mean you’ll pay significantly less for it.

All you need to know then is that the BMW 8 Series is one heck of a sports car. Mammoth performance and incredible designs are coupled with a 1990s nonchalance that makes it unmissable. This car will give you something to smile about and make you feel totally alive. The simple fact is that it makes minced meat of most modern 2 door sports coupes and is considerably more exclusive. Go ahead, make your day!
