Ford Ecosport

Ford's Ecosport crossover first appeared in the UK in 2014. It's a chunky compact SUV that is loosely based on the underpinnings of the acclaimed Ford Fiestahatchback.

The Ecosport is a very different type of vehicle though: a tall, rugged all-rounder that features a hint of off-road styling - a side-opening tailgate with a covered spare wheel mounted on it, for instance.

It's a spacious, practical family vehicle. There are three engines available: a 1.5L petrol unit, 1.5L diesel and an incredible small but powerful engine 1.0L, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit. This is a small and economical performer, producing a hefty 123bhp output thanks to its sophisticated twin camshafts that have independent variable timing. Incredibly, this means the little 1L power plant can tow loads of up to 700kg in weight.

The rest of the mechanical basics are conventional: the engine is at the front and drives the front wheels. The suspension is designed for good handling and a comfortable ride on the road. There are powerful disc brakes at the front.

Equipment levels are good: all models benefit from keyless entry, climate control and a cool box. Titanium X cars get leather trim, automatic lights, wipers and dipping mirror.
