Ellesmere Port

Ellesmere Port is a large coastal town located in Cheshire. Twinned with Reutlingen in Germany, it has a population of about 64,500. Situated on the banks of the River Mersey, it made its name as a busy dock in the 19th century.

Originally known as Netherpool, the name was changed to Ellesmere Port in the 19th century upon expansion and the creation of docks. The Manchester Ship Canal aided the town greatly, and it was able to benefit from the location of other industries.

A Vauxhall Motors plant was opened in 1962, and is the town’s major employer today. A notable shift from waterfront industries to retail and associated activities could be seen by the 1990s, and several outlets such as the Cheshire Oaks village and Coliseum were constructed. The port is still operational today however, just in a considerably smaller role.

Notable features in Ellesmere Port include Whitby Lighthouse, the Civic Hall and National Waterways Museum. With Vauxhall Motors FC as the local football team, the town has also previously been home to a speedway team as well.

Cheshire as a county is renowned for its natural beauty, so once you move away from the urbanised areas, it’s quite the driving location. Ellesmere Port is actually nicely positioned because places like the Peak District and even Snowdonia are within distance. Near the M56 and M53 motorways, in addition to the A41 road, it’s excellently connected to other areas.
