Eastbourne

Located in East Sussex on the south coast of England, Eastbourne is a large town which also gives its name to the surrounding borough. A popular seaside resort from the 19th century onwards, the population today is about 90,000, and it’s known as a notable retirement location.

Indeed the South Downs are a historically rich area, with artefacts from the Stone Age regularly being found. The Romans settled in Eastbourne, and remains of baths and fortifications can also be seen. An agricultural area throughout the Middle Ages, the 18th and 19th centuries were when the town really began to thrive, mainly due to the construction of a railway.

Playing an important part in the Second World War as an initial evacuation destination for children, it was an integral radar location and was a base for soldiers in the build up to D-day.

Today Eastbourne is a tourist destination thanks to the excellent beaches, Victorian hotels, pier and range of amenities. A classic British seaside town, there are numerous landmarks such as Beachy Head, cultural locations and various sports teams.

Eastbourne is surrounded by some truly magnificent countryside, and as such the area is remarkable for motorists. The definition of coastal driving, you’ll always have the smell of the sea in the air wherever you go. Venture further inland and it’s just as good however, with a plethora of B roads and lanes to venture down. In summer especially, it’s heaven.
