Oldham

Located in Greater Manchester, Oldham is a large town with 105,000 inhabitants that made its name as a centre for textile production back in the 19th century. It is twinned with Kranj in Slovenia and is surrounded by some fantastic countryside in the shape of the Pennines.

Indeed quite insignificant before the Industrial Revolution, the 18th and 19th centuries were when it really became developed and quite famous. The position between Manchester and the likes of Halifax meant it had no trouble attracting a workforce, and as such became an important factory town, and in fact the world’s centre of cotton manufacturing.

While industry might have declined, Oldham is still very much on the map in terms of being a retail and cultural centre. There are numerous shops, works of art and exhibits, the Spindles and Town Square shopping centres combining both aspects. With a proud sporting history, both Oldham Athletic football club and Oldham Roughyeds have achieved success over their long histories.

As a location for drivers, Oldham is pretty good. The simple fact that it borders some of the most changeable terrain in the area means that you don’t have to look too hard to find some truly magnificent roads. Whether you’d prefer to take on some open moorland or simply stick to the Pennine valleys, the scenery is beautiful and the experience is never boring. Add in some solid motorway links, and everywhere is accessible!
