St Albans

St Albans is a city in the county of Hertfordshire, and is situated north of London, east of Oxford and south west of Cambridge. A major commuter location to the capital, the population is around the 65,000 mark and a plethora of different places around the world are twinned with it, including Fano in Italy, Worms in Germany and Nevers in France to name a few.

There’s no disputing the long history of settlement around the city, and Roman ruins can still be seen today. An important market and religious area in the Middle Ages, it was also a major stopping point on the stage coach route to London from northern areas. Significant growth was seen after the Second World War thanks to the New Towns initiative.

Today, the city is a cultural centre and thrives on tourism especially. Numerous museums, historic sites and landmarks can be found in the town, as well as an abundance of old pubs and inns. Various sports teams are also present in the city, including St Albans FC, as well as hockey, cricket, rugby and gymnastics clubs.

There’s some beautiful countryside in the county, and drivers will thoroughly enjoy cruising around the areas surrounding St Albans. A great deal of farmland exists, and there’s nothing quite like motoring along back roads in between hedgerows, especially in summer. The great position relative to the M1, M25 and A1M means pretty much anywhere is accessible.
