If you're in the market for a car that's practical, affordable and economical, then a used Fiat Tipo is a great choice. The wide design makes the cabin feel exceptionally spacious, while a good level of standard kit is provided. The Tipo Cross lineup can handle poorer road surfaces with ease and it has an attractive appearance, too.
Fiat has produced both petrol and diesel engines for the modern-day Tipo lineup. While they have all included front-wheel drive, there's a choice between a manual and an automatic gearbox.
Petrol1.3-litre Multijet was also available that generates 93bhp and achieves an impressive 76mpg.
The compact nature of the Tipo ensures that it is great for driving around the city, but it also has enough room to be comfortable for families.
Interior spaceThe Tipo nameplate first arrived in 1988 as a five-door hatchback. Fiat supplied the Tipo lineup with a variety of engines and personalisation options until 1995 when it was discontinued. However, the company decided to bring it back in 2015, providing a more modern take on the model. This version lasted through 2023 until it was replaced by the 600e electric crossover model.
Fiat released the Tipo to replace the Ritmo. At first, it was only available as a five-door hatchback until Fiat realised that something sportier was needed. In 1993, the first three-door model came to the market.
At the same time, a refresh of the existing lineup was offered. Fiat installed slimmer headlights and placed a new horizontal bar on the grille. It was still cube shaped, but it had more rounded features. There were also body-coloured mirrors added to replace the previously black features.
When the Tipo nameplate re-entered the market, there were several different bodystyles available. The Tipo was given bold-looking headlights and a chromed mesh grille to hold the Fiat badge. A sporty roof spoiler was installed with an integrated brake light.
In the cabin, Fiat kept the materials and technology fairly uniform across all body styles. There were also several powertrain options to choose from, ensuring that every buyer had a model to fit their budget and needs.

The petrol engines are the most popular because they are the cheapest to buy and because there have been more choice available through the years. There is also a good selection of diesel engines available.
Fiat has supplied the Tipo in several model variants: Easy, Street, Easy Plus, Mirror, Lounge, S-Design and Sport. The base-level Easy, which includes 15-inch steel wheels, a TFT display, a heated rear window, air-conditioning and cruise control, has been the most popular.
Customers should look out for the larger 18-inch alloy wheels and a roof spoiler if they want their car to have a sportier appearance. There are also some upgraded tech features available, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and parking sensors. For more comfort, customers should look for a model with automatic air conditioning.
As a mid-size family hatchback, the Tipo does provide enough space for a family. The rear bench is big enough for two adults or three children, while the boot space is larger than the Renault Megane and Nissan Pulsar.
Fiat did offer a mild-hybrid configuration using a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to create 128bhp. This setup is rated at around 54mpg which is very decent for this segment. Fiat replaced the Tipo with the all-electric 600e model for zero tailpipe emissions.
Yes, there was an automatic transmission option with the Tipo, but it's not very popular among used models. It will be much easier to find a used Tipo with a manual gearbox.
