Few vehicle models come to mind when you think about an SUV for off-road, besides the Land Rover Discovery, but one of the ideal options is the Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee struggled to create a niche for itself in the SUV segment for other aspects, but it stood out for great handling and superior capability on rough terrains. The Cherokee is a good choice if you need a reliable vehicle to get you through extreme weather or unforgiving terrain.
The first Jeep Cherokee entered the market in the 1990s. It released as a right-hand-drive version of the Jeep XJ, which has become a valued classic among Jeep lovers. The latest-generation Cherokee is based on the 5th-generation Cherokee, which was released in 2014. Even though it doesn't have the same flair as the debut release, it's still very stylish and has a stunning look, thanks to the modernly designed 7-slot grille, extra air intakes and slender headlamps. A facelift in 2019 introduced larger headlights, a tidier front and new rear taillights. The Cherokee's engine is also impressively robust. The 2.2-litre diesel pushes the heavy machine to 62 mph in 9.1 seconds from rest, and it can achieve a maximum speed of 127 mph.
The Jeep Cherokee is available in 3 main trims; the Limited, the Overland and the Tailhawk. The latter trim dropped after the 2019 upgrade, but you can still find it in the used auto market. Earlier generation Cherokees also offered an entry-level Longitude trim. All of the later generation Cherokee trims have plenty of standard features across the range, including:

The top-range Tailhawk trim is where the actual value of the Jeep Cherokee lies. It comes with a unique package of features that include safety kits, such as lane-departure warning assistance, an automatic braking system and blind-spot monitoring. In addition, it has 20-inch titanium-finished alloy wheels and 4 beefy exhaust pipes. it's also the only version in the range that ever came with a V6 petrol engine.

The main Jeep Cherokee engine option comprises only a 2.2-litre diesel engine. However, it comes tuned to deliver 2 power output levels, including 138 bhp and 168 bhp. In later-generation Cherokees, the power output options increased to 148 bhp and 192 bhp. The lower power unit comes paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the higher 192 bhp motor comes with Jeep's latest 9-speed auto transmission.
Even though the value of the Cherokee lies in its off-road capability, Jeep understands that you aren't always going to be driving it on rough terrain. As a result, Jeep swayed from releasing the Cherokee as a full-time 4WD vehicle. The Cherokee has a specialised disconnecting rear axle system that automatically switches to 2WD whenever the 4WD system isn't in use. Even better, there is a ''4x2' front-wheel-drive Cherokee for those who want a Jeep but not for heavy off-road use.
Jeep designed the Cherokee to provide a comfortable ride and decent off-road performance, which is just what it delivers. While this is a good thing, it comes with a slight compromise on the cornering ability of the SUV. The heavy vehicle has significant body lean and provides little to no steering feedback. Nonetheless, choosing between an exciting driving experience or off-tarmac performance is expected for vehicle buyers in this class, which means all Cherokee owners ended up choosing the latter.
The top-range V6 engine offers a maximum braked trailer towing capacity of 2,200 kilograms. Though it is still good, it's not the best in the category, falling just short of the 2,400 kilograms provided by the Audi Q5. The standard 2.2-litre engine can tow up to 1,800 kilograms. Generally, the Cherokees is not a vehicle to go for if regular towing is your priority. If towing is what you're after, the Land Rover Discovery is a better option, offering a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms.
The Cherokee didn't cut any corners with its safety features. It comes with 7 airbags and electronic stability control. It also has an excellent 4-wheel-drive system to handle extreme conditions, whether on or off the road. It earned the maximum 5-star rating in the 2013 NCAP crash test due to its robust built. Thanks to its overall 83% score, the Cherokee earned the 'Best in Class' badge for safety, beating out all rivals in the small 4x4 off-road segment.
