If you're in the market for a used car that's versatile, and praised for high levels of safety and style, then a used Volvo V40 is a fantastic choice. The premium interior is practical yet luxurious, with comfortable seating for adults of all sizes. It also has an impressive amount of standard technology features and offers efficient and dependable motoring.
Volvo has built the V40 with petrol and diesel engines. These have been paired with a manual or automatic gearbox and standard front-wheel drive.
PetrolThanks to its smaller size compared with other Volvo models, the Volvo V40 is easy to drive and manoeuvre, but it also features enough space for people to be comfortable in both the front and rear.
Interior spaceThe Volvo V40 was first introduced in 1996 as a compact estate. That model continued through 2004, until it was discontinued from the lineup. The company remade the V40 in 2012, but this time as a premium hatchback. There was also a V40 Cross Country model, which featured SUV-inspired styling, added to the lineup later in the car's lifecycle, and both were in production until 2019.
In partnership with Mitsubishi, Volvo produced the first generation V40 and S40. The original design was an estate with a curved body and integrated fog lights in the lower bumper. Even though the rooflife extended beyond the rear doors, it looked more like a hatchback than an estate.
A facelifted V40 was introduced in 1999. The company added new taillights, headlights and bumpers to modernise the design. New safety technology and lighter alloy wheels were also added before the V40 was first discontinued in 2004.
The V40 nameplate was reintroduced in 2012, but this time as a premium compact hatchback, rather than an estate. Volvo hoped to compete against the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. While it had typical Volvo design cues, it featured a sportier grille and a trapezoidal-shaped lower air intake.
A 2016 refresh improved the look with updated taillights and reduced its emissions. A new lineup of powerplants also offered more efficiency.

There seems to be a nearly equal balance between the petrol and diesel engine options within the used V40 lineup. Drivers like diesel-engined V40s because of their strong fuel efficiency, but the petrol models can be more fun to drive, especially the T5.
Towards the end of production, the V40 was offered in five trims: Momentum, Momentum Nav Plus, Inscription, R-Design and R-Design Pro. Among these, the R-Design is one of the more popular with its standard 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, twin exhaust exits and sport seats.
The available Xenium Pack is a popular addition with its reversing camera, parking assist system, electronically adjustable seats and panoramic sunroof. There is also a Winter Pack that includes a heated front windscreen and heated front seats.
The Volvo V40 is a premium compact hatchback, so it's not meant to hold five adults for hours of travel. However, it does have a spacious back seat for kids, making it good for smaller families. The boot space is also better than some rivals.
The V40 was discontinued in 2019 and was never available as a hybrid. Volvo only ever offered petrol and diesel V40 models, but the company does have a wide range of other hybrid and electric cars to choose from.
An automatic was made available with some V40 models. Overall, the manual gearbox seems to be a more popular option, probably due to the added control and value it provides.
Volvo never offered the V40 with four-wheel drive.
