The Volvo S60 has several optional features, but 2 main packages stand out: the Convenience pack and the Intellisafe Pro pack. The former adds folding rear seats, a 230-volt power socket in the centre console and a comfortable headrest. The latter adds advanced safety features, such as active cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and auto-dimming mirrors for the interior and exterior. There is also the Xenium package, which gets you parking assist, a 360-degree camera and a panoramic sunroof.

Due to its quiet cabin and impressive range of driver-assist systems, the S60 is a great ride for long-distance trips. However, even with upgraded suspensions and brakes, the fastest S60 still isn't quite as exciting to drive as the BMW 3-Series or Alfa Romeo Giulia. As another plus, the S60's steering wheel accuracy inspires confidence to push performance limits, while the refined suspension keeps it well composed on bumpy surfaces.

After 2018, Volvo released the S60 with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and automatic transmission, regardless of trim. They also dropped diesel engines from the S60's range, leaving only the 250 HP, 390 HP hybrid and 405 HP hybrid engines. The R Design trim comes in two options: the 250 HP and 390 HP hybrid engines. The S60 Inscription is only available with the 250 HP powertrain, while the range-topping Polestar trim comes with the top-end 405 HP hybrid engine. All Volvo hybrids are 4-wheel-drive vehicles, while S60's powering the 250 HP engine are front-wheel drive.

Volvo's 390 HP and 405 HP hybrid engines combine the front 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with a small electric motor and lithium-ion battery in the back. Depending on which S60 trim, you'll either get a turbocharged 299 HP or a supercharged 314 HP petrol engine powering the front wheels, while the electric motor produces the remaining 91 HP to power the rear wheels.

Although the Volvo S60 is among the most practical cars in the saloon category, it trails behind many rivals with its 442-litre boot space. Replacing the puncture kit with a full-size spare further reduces its capacity to 390 litres. For comparison, the Audi A4 provides 480 litres of boot space. When you keep in mind that the S60 is a 4-wheel-drive hybrid with a rear motor, the luggage space is quite impressive.

The Euro NCAP awarded the Volvo S60 a full 5-star safety rating in 2018. The test results included an impressive 96% score for adult occupants' protection. The high safety rating is primarily due to the S60's strong build and the array of standard safety features that it packs. All trim variants get autonomous braking, anti-lock brakes, tyre-pressure warning and stability control, plus you can also add the optional Intellisafe Pro package to any level trim.
