For six decades, Land Rover ruled the off-road terrain with its legendary Defender model until 2016, when its production stopped. However, in 2020 Land Rover launched the all-new Defender 110, a modernised version of the original. The Defender 110 is a 5-passenger ultra off-road vehicle with a large boot that holds an optional 2-person third row of folding 40:20:40-split rear seats. Even with the extra row, rear seats still have sufficient wiggle room for tall passengers. Notable thoughtful features include a power outlet and air vent for every passenger. No wonder some people class the Defender 110 as an SUV, comparing it with BMW X5.
Having an automatic transmission means that lovers of the old manual Defender will miss the opportunity to show their off-road driving prowess with this new Defender. However, the new 110 generation, with its twin-speed gearbox and Terrain Response feature, can easily handle the same terrain as the old models.
The previous generations were unexciting, all-work-without-fun machines, but that changed in the 2020 overhaul. With a 10-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, you can enjoy your favourite music while wading through murky waters. It also comes with , which allows syncing 2 smartphones and 'over-the-air' updating of the car's software.
Like a proper off-road vehicle, it can tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg through 90cm deep water. This towing strength is way more than the uber-rugged Jeep Wrangler. It also has smart tech features to assist, including rear-mounting cameras and air suspensions. While the cameras help with visibility, the suspensions smoothen coupling by lowering and raising the car as necessary.
One of the caveats of the older 110s was their lack of significant safety features besides seatbelts, which might be why they had no official safety ratings. The latest models come with 6 airbags and several driver-assistance features as a standard, including driver condition monitoring, parking aid and cruise control. As a result, it earned 5-stars in the with an 85% score in the protection of adult and child occupants.
Defenders are known for their low depreciation and holding on to their value for a long time. This depreciation rate is why some old models still cost only slightly less than the base trim new model. Nonetheless, the price is significantly lower if you buy it after it has left the showroom. However, since it only re-released in 2020, even the prices for new Defenders are often close to the sticker price.
