Interior spaceFirst released in 2007, the Audi A5 was based on the A4, with added comfort and refinement. The luxury coupé quickly became popular in the UK, causing Audi to manufacture a five-door Sportback version just two years later, as well as a convertible variant known as the A5 Cabriolet. Now in its second generation (introduced in 2016), the A5 is more popular as a used car than ever, with upgraded tech features and new engine options.
Building on the success of the first generation, Audi sought to give the A5 lineup a more premium and aggressive look. New features were added, including an available premium 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. The A5 Sportback started to look a little more like its larger sibling, the A7, even though most of the interior still matched with the A4.
A refresh in 2019 upgraded the powertrains, appearance and multimedia system. New engines were compliant with the stricter Euro 6d emissions standards, while the styling added a new honeycomb mesh grille to the front, replacing the previous slatted model. Side sills were also added to increase stability.

The original A5 was based on the A4, as well as a 2003 concept car known as the Audi Nuvolari Quattro. The first-generation luxury coupé came with powerful engine options, and is mostly known for its refined cabin and sleek exterior design.
A 2011 refresh included a mild facelift to make the lineup sportier and more modern. New headlights were added and redesigned taillights became available with LED strips. Five-door Sportback models had sharper headlights and redesigned LED daytime running lights. The grille design was also extended, adding a recognisable, sharp appearance to the front fascia.

There's a near equal split between petrol and diesel engines on the used market. Some people prefer the smaller engines, such as the 35 TFSI or 35 TDi, to increase efficiency, while others are more focused on performance.
Audi currently offers the A5 in several trims, including the Sport, S Line and Black Edition. The S Line is currently the most popular trim, as it provides a sportier look with a rear spoiler, lowered suspension and S Line detailing on both the outside and inside the cabin.
We recommend looking out for models with heated seating (both front and rear heated seats are available on used Sportback models). There are also models with an adaptive sports suspension that improves handling. A panoramic sunroof can allow more light into the cabin, and a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo provides great sound quality.
The five-door A5 Sportback would be the better option for families as there are easily accessible rear doors, ISOFIX child seat mounts and a spacious boot.
While Audi has been a leader in hybrid and electric vehicles, the A5 doesn't currently come in a hybrid version. The A3 and A6 are offered as a plug-in hybrid, if that's a key selling point for you.
