Rhondda

Rhonda is a district made up of 16 different communities, and is located in the south of Wales. Also known as the Rhonda Valley, it’s a former mining area with a population of 60,000 and overall it’s the 4th largest urban area in the country.

With a landscape formed during the ice age, there has been human activity in the area since the Mesolithic period. It was the Industrial Revolution that really put it on the map however, and coal mining became as important as breathing for people in the area. From such highs, the Post War years were an all time low as the demand for coal plummeted. Many people emigrated from the area in the 1920s and 30s.

Sport has played a vital part in the area too, with numerous rugby union clubs being formed in the 19th century. There are also various cultural aspects that stand out, including the Welsh language, male voice choirs and brass bands.

Located south of the Brecon Beacons, there’s more than enough countryside for motorists to get their teeth into. The variable terrain around the valleys creates some fantastic roads that appeal all year round. It’s not difficult to get away from the built up areas, and actually it makes for a better experience as it’s just driver and car against the elements. With links to Cardiff, Newport and Swansea, there’s plenty of scope to move around.
