A refresh in 2021 focused heavily on upgrading the infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard technology, while the cabin received an upgraded 12.3-inch digital driver's display.

The first XC60 hit the streets when Ford owned the company, so the SUV shared some engineering with the Land Rover Freelander and the Ford Mondeo. Many of the early models were diesel-powered, with only a handful of petrol SUVs sold during the beginning.
