Nissan Leaf

Nissan's pioneering all-electric Nissan Leaf was launched in 2010. It claims to be the world's first mass-produced battery-powered car.

On paper the Leaf seems like a normal small family hatchback, it has five doors, five seats and feels like a car to drive. The Leaf is comfortable, spacious and rather nippy, it certainly looks just like a normal modern car from the outside.

Yet beneath its conventional skin, the Leaf has an electric motor driving its front wheels and no internal combustion engine at all.

This means the Leaf has ultra-frugal running costs. Nissan claims the car has a typical range of 73 miles under normal driving conditions.

It typically takes eight hours to fully recharge the Leaf's battery from empty from a 240volt power supply, like a normal household socket. However, using Nissan's special DC fast charger, the battery can be recharged to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes. Little wonder that in 2011 the Leaf won the World Car of the Year award.
