Peugeot 508

French car-maker Peugeot launched the 508 large family car range in 2010. The model comes either as a four-door saloon or a five-door estate.

Underneath, the 508's mechanical layout is conventional, with a front-mounted engine driving the front wheels. It's closely related to Citroen's acclaimed C5 luxury car and it shares many components with the successful Citroen.

This means that the 508 is a Mondeo-sized car. It competes against some very established rivals but the French newcomer has handsome looks and a particularly neat interior. There are no flashy gimmicks inside, it simply seems to have high quality materials and a sophisticated, uncluttered layout. It feels - and looks - classy.

The sportiest model is the 508GT, with a 2.2L turbodiesel and more performance-oriented suspension. All other engines in the range are either 1.6L or 2.0L petrol or diesel. Top of the range is the 508 RXH, an impressive all-wheel-drive estate powered by a hybrid combination of a 2.0L diesel and an electric motor.

All of the 508s are spacious for this class of car. Look out for that lovely big boot which includes a clever design touch from Peugeot: there's a lever inside the boot opening to lower the back seats and create a huge luggage bay.
