Volkswagen Phaeton

The Volkswagen Phaeton is a truly wonderful car, and the first all out luxury saloon made by the German company. It’s a ‘no holds barred’ attempt to steal the limelight from other big names, and actually goes some way to achieving its aim. Titanic amounts of cabin space, superb levels of comfort and a stylish design mean it’s certainly up there with the best.

Released in 2002, the VW oozes with premium quality. Its name is derived from Greek mythology, and it’s certainly an Olympian in terms of size. While not as popular as some other models, like the Golf, the Phaeton still holds a lot of appeal and is packed full of technology, both in the cabin and under the hood. Big engines, including the famous W12, the ‘4MOTION’ 4 wheel drive system and a patented climate control system mean it’s well stocked overall.

On the design side of things, the Phaeton isn’t a particularly loud or ‘shouty’ car, and is more refined and modest. It doesn’t stand out, but then again it doesn’t cower away and hide. Featuring an obviously ‘upper class’ version of Volkswagen’s classic front end and body shape, it’s really rather handsome. This is a car that’s all about comfort and the interior is a fantastic atmosphere to get into. With armchair like seats, quality materials and a whole heap of kit, it’s more than capable of mixing it with the best. There’s also a large boot and loads of cabin storage areas, so practicality isn’t lacking by any means.

Despite being a large car, the clever engineering gadgetry means you can alter suspension settings to get a sportier feel on back roads with tighter corners. However it’s superb as a motorway cruiser and isn’t bad around town at low speeds either. The ride is wonderfully soft and all things considered, the handling isn’t that bad. Some beastly engines mean it won’t be in one place for long, and you can choose from V6, V8 and W12 petrols, as well as V6 and V10 diesels. Hugely powerful, economy is actually quite good compared to other monsters out there.

This isn’t a cheap car at all, in fact it’s one of the most expensive VW has ever produced. However buying one second hand is by far the best way to pick up a stonking good deal.
