The Vauxhall Ampera arrived on the UK market in 2010 and is a front-wheel-drive, five-door, four-seat, small family hatchback.

The key point about the Ampera, however, is that it is an electric car that switches to its 1.4L four-cylinder petrol engine when the batteries run out of charge. Quoted top speed is 100mph, with the standard 0-60mph acceleration taking less than nine seconds.

The boot space is 300 litres and can be extended up to 1,000 litres when the split-folding rear seats are folded flat.
