The T-Roc encompasses the versatility of the Golf but with a raised ride height and wider wheel arches, it has a stronger presence on the road. Along with the smaller T-Cross, the T-Roc marks Volkswagen's response to the consumer desire for affordable, practical and good-looking crossover SUVs. The T-Roc comes in an array of engines and trims starting with the 1.0L turbocharged petrol, which outputs 113 bhp and can achieve 53 mpg.
There is a more powerful 1.5L turbocharged petrol and 1.6L and 2.0L turbocharged diesel engines, the former of which will achieve 49.6 mpg. Insurance groups are reasonably low across the range of T-Rocs, with the 1.6L TDi in the 'Design' trim offering the lowest at insurance group 10. The standard equipment for the T-Roc is great for its price point and the higher trims come with a plethora of fantastic safety and convenience features.
The Volkswagen T-Roc S is the standard trim level, yet comes with a fantastic list of features and equipment that really stand out at this price point. Here are a few of the standard T-Roc features:
Although the S trim has a great set of features and equipment, the higher-level trims and optional extras are common in second-hand Volkswagen T-Rocs. Here are some of our favourites. Features will vary depending upon the model and year.
Volkswagen is renowned for making affordable, practical and reliable cars and the T-Roc is no exception. The T-Roc has a roomy cabin in the front and back and great visibility all round, aided by the increased ride height. As a sub-compact SUV, the T-Roc is the best of both worlds as it offers more practicality than a standard hatchback but is easier to drive and park than a full-sized SUV.
Yes! The T-Roc comes with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or Volkswagen's 7-speed DSG gearbox, which is a dual-clutch system. Dual-clutch automatic transmissions have quicker shift times while ensuring a smooth transition up and down the gears. Also, expect an improvement in fuel economy with the DSG transmissions as they can shift more efficiently than a manual gearbox.
All but the 2.0L diesel variant of the T-Roc are front-wheel drive, while the 2.0L diesel is available as an all-wheel-drive only. If it's important to you to have all-wheel-drive, then you are limited to the 2.0L diesel engine only.
The T-Roc is built on the same chassis as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf; two incredibly popular cars with families that are praised for being practical and spacious. The T-Roc is no exception and you will find that you have even more boot space and rear passenger room than the Golf. The T-Roc comes with ISOFIX mounting points for car seats and is rated 5* by Euro NCAP, which is why we'd recommend it as a fantastic option for a family car.
The T-Roc only comes in petrol or diesel engines with no announcement from Volkswagen about plans to electrify the model.
The T-Roc is a great all-rounder to drive. The turbocharged engines perform well, and you always have power when you need it. The steering is light and the gearbox feels solid, a commonality between Volkswagen cars. If you're looking for a more sporty drive, opt for the larger 2.0L diesel engine which has a 0-60 time of just 6.1 seconds, or the 'R-trim' 2.0L petrol, which generates 295 bhp and has a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds.
