Engines and transmissions

Fiat has produced both petrol and diesel engines for the modern-day Tipo lineup. While they have all included front-wheel drive, there's a choice between a manual and an automatic gearbox.

Petrol
  • In its final years, only the mild-hybrid was available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to generate 128bhp, returning around 54mpg.
  • 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder creates 98bhp for a 0-62mph time of 12 seconds and a fuel economy rating of around 51mpg.
  • Other options included a 93bhp 1.4-litre, a 108bhp 1.6-litre and a 118bhp 1.4-litre engine with a fuel economy rating ranging between 36mpg and 44mpg, depending on the configuration.
Diesel
  • 1.6-litre produces 118bhp and returns between 51mpg and 83mpg, depending on the model variant.

1.3-litre Multijet was also available that generates 93bhp and achieves an impressive 76mpg.

Practicality

The compact nature of the Tipo ensures that it is great for driving around the city, but it also has enough room to be comfortable for families.

Interior space
  • Spacious front seats offer enough adjustment to get a good view.
  • Tipo Cross models have a higher ride height, lifting the driver's seat up further.
  • Rear bench can hold two adults or three children.
Boot space
  • 440-litre boot offers more room than the Renault Megane and Nissan Pulsar.
  • Back seat folds completely flat to provide around 1,300 litres of space.
  • Electric boot release available.
Bodystyles
  • Hatchback variant has been available with three or five doors.
  • Four-door saloon was available, but it isn't a popular bodystyle.
  • Estate offers more rear seat room.

Safety

  • 2016 Euro NCAP testing gave the Tipo a four-star rating.
  • Adult occupant rating is 82%.
  • Standard kit includes active lane keeping, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

Technology

  • Available 7.0-inch touchscreen adds a modern touch to the cabin, but there's also a 5.0-inch unit in some models.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto found on top-spec models for more connectivity.
  • Bluetooth allows for smartphone integration.

Fiat Tipo generations

The Tipo nameplate first arrived in 1988 as a five-door hatchback. Fiat supplied the Tipo lineup with a variety of engines and personalisation options until 1995 when it was discontinued. However, the company decided to bring it back in 2015, providing a more modern take on the model. This version lasted through 2023 until it was replaced by the 600e electric crossover model.

First Generation (1988-1995)

Fiat released the Tipo to replace the Ritmo. At first, it was only available as a five-door hatchback until Fiat realised that something sportier was needed. In 1993, the first three-door model came to the market.

At the same time, a refresh of the existing lineup was offered. Fiat installed slimmer headlights and placed a new horizontal bar on the grille. It was still cube shaped, but it had more rounded features. There were also body-coloured mirrors added to replace the previously black features.

Second Generation (2016 to 2021)

When the Tipo nameplate re-entered the market, there were several different bodystyles available. The Tipo was given bold-looking headlights and a chromed mesh grille to hold the Fiat badge. A sporty roof spoiler was installed with an integrated brake light.

In the cabin, Fiat kept the materials and technology fairly uniform across all body styles. There were also several powertrain options to choose from, ensuring that every buyer had a model to fit their budget and needs.

Used Fiat Tipo FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Fiat Tipo?

The petrol engines are the most popular because they are the cheapest to buy and because there have been more choice available through the years. There is also a good selection of diesel engines available.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Fiat has supplied the Tipo in several model variants: Easy, Street, Easy Plus, Mirror, Lounge, S-Design and Sport. The base-level Easy, which includes 15-inch steel wheels, a TFT display, a heated rear window, air-conditioning and cruise control, has been the most popular.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for the larger 18-inch alloy wheels and a roof spoiler if they want their car to have a sportier appearance. There are also some upgraded tech features available, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and parking sensors. For more comfort, customers should look for a model with automatic air conditioning.

Is the Fiat Tipo a good family car?

As a mid-size family hatchback, the Tipo does provide enough space for a family. The rear bench is big enough for two adults or three children, while the boot space is larger than the Renault Megane and Nissan Pulsar.

Is there a hybrid version of the Fiat Tipo?

Fiat did offer a mild-hybrid configuration using a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to create 128bhp. This setup is rated at around 54mpg which is very decent for this segment. Fiat replaced the Tipo with the all-electric 600e model for zero tailpipe emissions.

Is the Fiat Tipo available as an automatic?

Yes, there was an automatic transmission option with the Tipo, but it's not very popular among used models. It will be much easier to find a used Tipo with a manual gearbox.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, Fiat only built the Tipo with a standard front-wheel drive configuration. This setup ensures maximum efficiency and also keeps the weight down to improve acceleration times.
