The Ford Galaxy was unveiled in 1995 as a family-friendly MPV, produced in partnership with SEAT, Volkswagen and Ford. For that reason, there were many similarities between the Galaxy, Alhambra and Sharan. Through three generations and multiple facelifts, Ford kept the Galaxy relevant and roomy for families until the model was discontinued in 2023.

Engines and transmissions
Ford has offered petrol, hybrid and diesel powertrains, a manual or automatic transmission, and front-wheel or four-wheel drive with the Galaxy.
Petrol- 1.5-litre EcoBoost creates 163bhp, with a rating of 38.2mpg and 168g/km of CO2.
- 2.0-litre EcoBoost makes 237bhp to provide a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds, a top speed of 140mph and a similar rating to the 1.5-litre.
- Petrol-electric hybrid became the sole option in the latter years with its 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor offering a top speed of 127mph and an average fuel rating of 37mpg.
- 2.0-litre engines have power output between 118bhp and 237bhp, with an efficiency rating of up to 52.3mpg.
- Improved torque compared with petrol engines make them a superior towing vehicle
Practicality
With the ability to hold a large family and carry luggage, the Ford Galaxy is extremely practical.
Interior space- Seven-passenger seating in most models, but some had five seats instead.
- Middle row slides easily to make more space for those in the back.
- Adults can fit comfortably in all three rows.
- Standard ISOFIX points are found in the middle row to secure child seats.
- 300-litre boot is still a good size even with all seats in position.
- Folding down all of the rear seats leaves a flat floor that holds up to 2,339 litres of cargo.
- Second and third row offer 32 adjustable seating configurations.
- Large boot opening gives quick access to the rear of the MPV.
Safety
- Perfect five-star rating given by Euro NCAP in 2015.
- Both adult and child occupant ratings are 87%.
- Standard kit includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, trailer-sway control, active rollover protection and hill start assist.
Technology
- SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offer solid connectivity.
- Satnav systems were available with the infotainment centre.
Ford Galaxy generations
Third Generation (2015 to Present)
While the dimensions of the third-generation Galaxy were the same as the previous models, the newest selection offered a more modern style. Thinner headlamps were added, along with LED tail lights. Because it was built on a car platform, the handling was superior and vastly different from a larger SUV.
With the 2019 refresh, the styling was further updated with clear-lens fog lights and improved headlights. The top-spec model also included a hexagonal grille with 3D mesh. Ford focused on better emissions and efficiency from the engine lineup for the final years of the Galaxy's production.

Second Generation (2006 to 2014)
The second generation was the first Galaxy model produced outside of the Volkswagen partnership, and Ford focused on making the lineup more practical. The manufacturer used many of the same components from the S-MAX, but it was longer and wider to allow room for seven people to fit.
This generation of Galaxy offered updated tech and comfort features that keep this model relevant today. A bright instrument cluster was added and the leather-wrapped steering wheel provided an upmarket feel to the cabin.

Used Ford Galaxy FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Ford Galaxy?
The 2.0-litre diesel engines have been the most popular because they offer a good balance of performance and efficiency. It's much more difficult to find the petrol or hybrid configurations among used Galaxys.
Which are the most popular model variants?
Throughout the years, the Ford Galaxy was offered in many variants, including the Zetec and Titanium. The Titanium has been among the most popular with LED daytime running lights, keyless entry, silver roof rails and rain-sensing front wipers coming as standard.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Customers should look out for the panoramic roof, which offers a brighter, more inviting cabin. Heated leather seats can be added to the front, while a power automatic tailgate provides convenient access to the boot.
Is the Ford Galaxy a good family car?
Yes, the purpose of the Galaxy was to provide an affordable option for families, with lots of interior space and 7 seats coming in every version. There's a wide selection of powertrains, features and equipment available, allowing families to find a model that suits them.
Is there a hybrid version of the Ford Galaxy?
Towards the end of production, the Ford Galaxy was only available in a self-charging hybrid configuration. This setup has a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for increased efficiency, a 37mpg fuel economy rating and lower emissions compared to conventional models.
Is the Ford Galaxy available as an automatic?
Yes, there are automatic and manual gearboxes available with the used Galaxy. Both are nearly equally as popular, so there shouldn't be an issue finding either version of the Galaxy in the used car market.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
While most used Ford Galaxy MPVs came with front-wheel drive, there were some that had four-wheel drive. This added capability is helpful on slippery terrain, but it can be difficult to find among the used selection and the front-wheel variants cope well in usual driving conditions.
