Used SEAT Alhambra information

Engines and transmissions

Diesel and petrol engines have been available, with a manual or an automatic gearbox and standard front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 1.4 TSI produces 147bhp, giving it a 0-60mph time of 9.6 seconds.
  • Efficiency rating returns around 43mpg at best, depending on the trim.
Diesel
  • 2.0 TDI outputs between 113 and 181bhp, depending on the trim.
  • All diesels achieve a minimum fuel economy of 50mpg.

Practicality

Few people carriers actually have enough room for seven people to be comfortable, which makes the Alhambra a rare and extremely practical vehicle.

Interior space
  • Seven adults fit comfortably in the cabin, with its 2+3+2 layout.
  • Middle row features individual seats that fold forward with a pull from a lever.
  • Middle row also slides, allowing for customised space in the two back rows.
  • Sliding rear doors give access to both back rows, with the availability on higher trims to have electrically opening doors.
  • Second-row seats have ISOFIX mounting points.
Boot space
  • 267-litre boot space (with all seats in place) is about the same size as a small hatchback, such as the Ibiza.
  • With the rear seats folded down, the cargo space opens up to 2,297 litres, similar to the VW Sharan.
  • Available electrically opening boot lid gives access when hands are full.

Safety

  • Four-star rating given by Euro NCAP.
  • Adult occupancy rating is 89%.
  • Standard safety kit includes seven airbags, a tyre pressure monitor, hill-hold, ABS and stability control.

Technology

  • Colour touchscreen display gives the cabin a modern feel.
  • Available sat nav system is easy to use.
  • Top trims offered DAB radio for more flexibility.

SEAT Alhambra generations

Unveiled in 1996, the SEAT Alhambra shared a platform with the Volkswagen Sharan, making the two people carriers nearly identical. A second generation arrived in 2010 with a new design and updated power options, but the Alhambra was discontinued in 2020, with SEAT recommending the seven-seater Tarraco SUV as its replacement.

First Generation (1996-2010)

In order to share the development costs between them, SEAT, Volkswagen and Ford worked on a people carrier design together. The result was the SEAT Alhambra, Ford Galaxy and Volkswagen Sharan, which were all built in Spain. However, the SEAT version was slightly sportier and designed for a younger audience. The larger headlights and 'smiling' grille gave it a distinctive look.

A 2000 update maintained the brand's image, but the roof had more of a curve toward the back where it met with a curved tailgate. The design was meant to be cutting-edge and it paired nicely with the body-coloured bumper extension and updated headlights.

Second Generation (2010 to 2020)

Volkswagen and SEAT built the Alhambra with shared resources. The main difference between the Sharan and the SEAT Alhambra is the latter's sportier appearance. It featured wide angular headlights that made the front end look sharper. It was topped with 16 vertical slats on a broad black grille to provide a commanding presence.

With the start of the newest generation, SEAT only carried over a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel from the original configurations. Aside from that, the powertrains were all brand-new.

Used SEAT Alhambra FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the SEAT Alhambra?

The 2.0 TDI diesel engine is the most popular, likely because it's far more efficient than the petrol motors. With several different outputs depending on the trim, there are various options available among used models.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Near the end of production, there were three trim levels to choose from: S, SE and SE Lux. However, in 2018, the Xcellence trim was also added, and this has proven to be the most popular among Alhambra owners with the added panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and chromed roof rails.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers who desire more luxury should look out for black leather upholstery and an electric panoramic sunroof. It is also possible to find some practical additions, such as the sat nav system, a rear-view camera and powered sliding doors for easier rear seat access.

Is the SEAT Alhambra a good family car?

With the ability to hold seven adults while still leaving a reasonable amount of boot space, the SEAT Alhambra is a people carrier specifically designed for families. With modern technology and advanced safety equipment, it's one of the most practical used cars around.

Is there a hybrid version of the SEAT Alhambra?

No, SEAT only equipped the Alhambra with petrol and diesel engines. The only used hybrid SEAT is the Leon, which doesn't have seven seats.

Is the SEAT Alhambra available as an automatic?

There were automatic and manual gearbox options with select engines. Among used models, there's an equal split between the two, so it shouldn't be difficult to find either one.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, all Alhambra models were built with front-wheel drive.
