There's one engine option with the new Picanto, and it's among the most efficient that it has ever had. The 1.0-litre motor puts out 66bhp and is capable of up to 55.4 mpg, making it perfect for getting around the city without spending a lot on petrol.

This is an area where the Kia Picanto scores very well. All generations of the car have inexpensive insurance, and the 2017 model is down in insurance group 5. That makes it an attractive buy if you're on a tight budget, as well as making it a realistic option for younger drivers.

The Picanto comes in five trim levels: 1, 2, 3, X-Line S and GT-Line. As a base model, the 1 offers drivers a more economical option, but it doesn't have many features. Top-tier models have more technology and comfort equipment, but the price is raised accordingly.

Even as a budget-friendly vehicle, high-tech features are available. Look out for models with options such as a satellite navigation system, a wireless phone charger and parking sensors. Comfort features are also available, such as heated front seats.

The Picanto is best reserved for younger families with small children, as taller people will find it a bit cramped in the back seats. If you are travelling with smaller children, the back seat may provide enough space, and there are ISOFIX points for hooking up car seats.

Kia doesn't have a hybrid variant of the Picanto yet, but one may arrive in the future. It's still an economical car with its 1.0-litre petrol engine that earns a combined 55.4 mpg.

While the Kia Picanto does have the option to include a six-speed manual transmission, there's also an available five-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both of these pair to the 1.0-litre petrol engine.
